Hey the Beach, of course!
Well I've already mentioned a few times about the fresh smell of the salt air. Even if you haven't grown up near the beach like I did you must enjoy seeing the ocean, especially when it meets either a spectacular headland or a lovely beach.
Well Coogee has a couple of small, less than spectacular, but quite pleasant headlands, one at the northern end (the nicer end I think) & one at the southern end.
It's a pleasant walk from one end of the beach from the northern headland south or vice versa & only takes 10 minutes each way.
There are some beautiful colours in the rock formations near the southern end, but you have to take the lower walkway near the sand to see them. I will be adding 2 or 3 photos of this in a travelogue, but it won't be tonight so drop back in a couple of days.

Please Pay Your Respects
I don't put this up as a must see tip lightly, but if you are at Coogee I think you should visit this sculpture, on the northern headland, that has been erected as part of a memorial to the Bali Bomb victims from the local area, especially the local Coogee Dolphins Rugby League club.
We didn't know what this was yesterday morning until we stopped to read the plaque underneath it which exlained what it was & who the sculptor was. Just down to the right is a wall with names of all local people who were killed in this terrorist attack.
While I may not entirely agree with how the "war on terror" is being pursued I think we must pay our respects to the innocent victimes of it & recognise how evil hate for hate's sake is.
So please, do as we did & pay your respects, in whatever way you think appropriate, to these innocent victims.

Coogee to maroubra walk
A great alternative to the famous coogee to Bondi walk is the Coogee to Maroubra walk - Just as scenic with lots less people. It will take about 2-3 hours, buses 377 and 376 run from Maroubra run about every 30minutes.
here is a link to a PDF of the map.

WALKWAY TO CLOVELLY BEACH
When I was at Coogee beach I decided to walk around the clifftops to the next beach which was called Clovelly.(see my Clovelly page) This walk takes you along the top of the headland with great views of the southern coast. This pathway also leads through a picturesque little cove and reserve known as Gordons Bay.I always enjoy walking around our beaches as they usually let you get to see the great views that they offer and usually they all have great paved pathways making the walks easy and safe...although the walk to Clovelly was up and down it is a wide and safe pathway..

This is an annual event where participants swim around Wedding Cake island in search of glory... or just because they're mad and thought its a good idea. The swim is 2.4km and on the calendar of oceanswims. Last year the event attracted around 1000 competitors and many many more spectators from the beach. Its definitely an event to look out for whether you're interested in competing, or just after a spectacle for the day.
If you're into sporting challenges, add this to your calendar, along with the City to Surf which is held on 14 August this year.

Coogee to Bondi walk
This is a quite popular walk - along the coastline between Coogee and Bondi. The walk offers some spectacular rock formations and cliffs. Along the way, you go past Cloveley, Bronte and Tamarama, so if your not as energetic, you don't really have to go all the way. The walk takes about 1.5 to 2hrs. In summer make sure you take a hat and sunscreen!
The walk starts at Dolphin Point at the Coogee end - The doorway there is the old entrance to the Giles Gym, the rest of which was demolished. The doorway now also serves as a memorial to the Austrilans who died in the Bali Bombings.
There is an anual Sculpture exhibition that takes place between Bondi and Tamarama in November - see seperate tip...

Coogee Surf Carnival
This is held in Febuary each year and hosted by the Coogee Surf Lifesaving club. If you're planning on going for a quiet swim, this probably isn' the day for it, because most of the beach is closed to general swimmers for the day, but it is a great opportunity to see Surf Lifesaving Events in action, including Surfboats, the Ironman, and beach sprints or flags.
Naturally the evening is also a huge night to be out in Coogee... and if you're lucky you might get to meet a nice Ironman or woman!!
The Carnival is one of several carnivals that make up the Sydney Surf Lifesaving calendar and are hosted by the respective surfclubs. If you can't make this one, try Manly or Bondi. Coogee is still better though :) If you're after info about the surfclub, the office is open on Sundays from 10am to 1 durring the season from Sept to April.

So the surf season is over... what are you supposed to do on the weekend? Well if there's no patrol on the beach, it means its rugby Season. That's the time to hang out at the Rugby Club in Coogee, or better still go to a live game. Its only $15 and there's cheap beer, and snags on the BBQ.
Randwick actually plays in Coogee, and usually puts a competitive side on the field. Like all good things - you can find out when games are on via the net at Randwick's website.
The Rugby can also of course be combined with other fine Coogee instiutions such as the CBH.

Coogee Beach is a popular Syndey suburb beach. The beach has nice surf and waves as well as some ocean pools. Life Guards are always on duty so you feel safe swimming.
Our first visit to Coogee was when we walked the Scenic Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee. It was a spectacular walk that took us from north to south from Bondi Beach, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly, and to Coogee.
The Ritz cinema
If you are stuck with a cold rainy day you cant beat a movie at the Ritz. Adults $9 students $8, these are the cheapest movie tickets in town.
