    Wambelong Track

Favorite thing: This short loop walk begins from the eastern side of Canyon Picnic Area and follows Wambelong Creek through a small, sheltered gorge. This area is a haven for birds, particularly in drier times. As you walk along the track you will see interesting rock formations in the river shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago.
The track rises to a rocky outcrop with views down the central valley of the park and nearby Split Rock. Keep your eyes on the treetops as sometimes koalas are seen in the gums near the creek. The nearby camping area is also a popular resting spot for eastern grey kangaroos and the occasional emu.

    Spire on fire

Favorite thing: In 2013 there were some bad fires in the Coonabarabran area. They burned for days, weeks even. Some were in inaccessible areas so they continued to burn. Homesteads and properties bordering the park went up in smoke as did a large area of the national park, including, sadly, the excellent tourist centre.

Fondest memory: These shots were taken from the western side of Coonabarabran, near the back entrances to the Warrumbungle. Most notably was the Spire, a sharp outcrop that's particularly noticeable from this side of the national park.
I wanted to record what was going on, hope you realise just how devastating bushfires can be in Australia. See my next tip for what it's like inside the park.
