We visited as part of our car club event, but the Smokehouse is open to the public daily. What do they do? Well, they produce a particularly tasty range of smoked foods using local produce, ranging from trout and chicken to walnuts, and delicatessen products from pâtes to sun dried tomatoes. We were favoured with a tour and saw the breeding tank where they breed and raise their own trout, plus the rotary smoking racks (able to hold 1 tonne at a time). Then we went outside for lunch under the trees – at last we’re getting toward the ‘restaurant’ bit!
Lunch consisted of large platters of freshly smoked foods, a great salad, local olives, and char grilled eggplant which were shared among the group. Bon appetite! How were they received – well, let’s just say that the second round of platters went nearly as fast as the first! A very enjoyable coffee washed it all down, before everyone went shopping for their own supplies. Yes, definitely recommended as a stopover for something different from the usual restaurant meals – and for some to take home!
