    FREE CAMPING

    Little Italy Rest Area
    1 more image

Favorite thing: New Italy at Woodburn is a FREE CAMPING area for those travelling along the Pacific highway.
There is plenty of room to park your camper van and shade if the days are hot. Toilets are located behind the buildings, and somewhere there are showers [so I was told] Picnic benches and BBQ'S are at the location.
There doesn't seem to be a time limit to length of stay.
Just remember, at night the semi-trailers are in convoys, so expect plenty of traffic noise, not the best if your a light sleeper.

    PAPERBARK GALLERY

    Paperbark tree

Favorite thing: For all of you who don't happen to know what paperbark is, then let me tell you.
The Paperbark is a name of a Tree often found in swampy or wet areas. Next time you see a Tree, take a close look, for you shall find the tree trunk is covered by a white, beige and grey thick papery bark resembling paper.

At Evan's Head, there are lots of Paperbarks growing, and there is also a Paperbark gallery. It is a chance to see how clever the Artist is to make a beautiful picture out of paperbark. You can buy them framed just as you do a painting.
At the Paperbark Gallery, is a collection of Australian craft items for sale. Sixty artist's have presented their work, so there is a broad range of products on display. The Gallery is also a working workshop.

    BROWN TOURIST SIGNS

by balhannah Updated Oct 25, 2013

Tourist route sign to Evan's Head

Favorite thing: Heading along the Northern New South Wales coast, you will come across many Brown Tourist signs.
If you have the time, I suggest following either the suggested routes, or perhaps like Evans Head, it is just a drive into the seaside town and then out again the other end, no doubling back required.
It's a chance to see some of our most scenic places, much better than the highway scenery.

    SUGAR MILL @ BROADWATER

by balhannah Written Oct 25, 2013

    Broadwater Sugar Mill

Favorite thing: The town of Broadwater is where we turned off to go to Evan's Head.

Broadwater is all about the sugar mill which is located beside the Pacific Highway.
The sugar mill began operating in 1880. In the early days, the cane was carried to the mill on punts, not so today! The Mill is still working and is a major employer of people living in this area. We saw miles and miles of Sugar Cane growing in this area and being harvested, this happens from early June to the end of the year. If your nearby and happen to see a glow in the sky in the evening, take a drive and witness one of the spectacular cane fires.
Tours of the sugar mill are available during this time.

    OUR DAILY BREAD CAFE

Favorite thing: Old Australian Churches are put to all types of use, usually as a cheap home for somebody.
In Broadwater, just a short drive from Evan's Head, is a beautifully painted old Church that has been turned into "Our Daily Bread Café."

It was the Broadwater Catholic Church that was no longer used and left to rot away. A business couple bought the Church and went about restoring it the best they could. As it's a Heritage listed building, they could install a mezzanine floor and kitchen, leaving the rest as it was.

Food at Our Daily Bread is as the name suggests, bread-based.
Along with the food & coffee, is a collection of 1950s - 1970s Australian pottery.

It is located beside the Pacific Highway and has plenty of FREE OFF-ROAD PARKING. If you have never seen Sugar Cane before, then this is your chance for a close up view!

A good place to stop for the 2hour rest break from driving.
