We are Water Skiers, and envy the big wide calm waters of the Clarence river. Only wish we had something like this near where I live.
October, and the River is a very busy place, as this is when the
BRIDGE TO BRIDGE SKI RACE is held.
The Grafton Bridge to Bridge is a 108 km water ski race from Grafton to Harwood Bridge and return. The event attracts competitors from Australia, New Zealand and USA and is considered one of the toughest events on the water ski racing calendar.
150 of the worlds fastest Water Ski Race Boats towing skiers behind compete on the water, reaching speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour, this is a sight to see!
This year, the current record at 36 minutes and 52 seconds, held by a Victorian crew "Hellbent" was beaten by the Queensland team on "Blazen' who clocked 36 Minutes & 50 Seconds to hold the new record.
We also checked out the Seelands Ski Resort where you can stay, a nice area. There is entertainment, food and drinks, because once the Boats are out of sight, then you have to sit and wait for their return, at least it isn't a long wait!
There is also a Bridge to Bridge Sailing Classic held every November, a lot more sedate!
The big event on the Grafton Racing Calendar, is "The Grafton Cup" which is run on the second Thursday in July, and is the richest race in Rural Australia. The carnival draws many nationally rated jockeys and horses competing, so for visitor's, its a great time to have a day at the races!
Horse racing is VERY popular here, so much, that Cup day is a half-day holiday!
Grafton is regarded as one of the country capitals of Australian racing, holding 40 meetings a year.
Not only a Racecourse, but located in the centre is a 9 hole golf course.
