    OUTBACK TOILETS

by balhannah Written Jun 17, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: No worries Mate, We have Toilets [washrooms] whatever, anywhere!

Not like my time in Europe when it was hard to find one in a Capital City.

Out here in the bush, 700kms from a Capital city, we have them, they may not be 5*, but it is a Loo, sometimes you maybe lucky and have a view, that is, a hole in the corrugated iron to peer through!

If you go on the Chambers of the Black Hand tour, and you happen to "fall short," don't worry, the one in my photo is available for use!

It is a "long drop"......Probably over an old mine shaft, don't forget to use it, ......something to tell the folks back home!

    BIRDS

by balhannah Updated Jun 17, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Wild birds we encountered at Lightning Ridge were Apostle Birds. They are funny birds, and are quite used to humans.

If you are staying at the Hotel/Motel Caravan Park, take a look at their aviary. They have some beautiful Australian Parrots in it.

The 1st three photos are of the same Parrot of which I do not know its name.

    Photo 4.........Superb Parrot

    Photo 5.........Apostle Birds

    MINER'S CLAIM

by balhannah Written Jun 16, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Want to go Opal mining........Then you must get a Miners Claim.

    Just a little about it......

You need to clearly mark your claim area, and you need to notify the owner of the land of your intention of applying for a claim.
IF THE MINERAL CLAIM IS NOT MARKED OUT CORRECTLY IT MAY BE CANCELLED BY THE MINING REGISTRAR.
Be careful not to peg-over someone else's claim. All claims must have a post or picket in each corner with a metal tag attached indicating the number of the claim
When the post has been erected, a "Possession notice" must be attached to a board on the post. Claim must be square in shape and may not exceed 50 x 50 metres.

A security deposit is lodged by the claim holder, with it being returned either when the claim is cancelled or transferred to another party.

Favorite thing: Opal is said to cure depression - and to help the wearer find true and real love!

Black opal is reputed to further enhance positive characteristics of those born under the sign of Cancer. Opal is recommended for people born under Scorpio and boulder opal (found at Quilpie in Queensland) is said to be lucky for Arians!

    Guide to Buying Opal

by thedouglas Written Nov 9, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There's a bit to know about buying opal - following is a summary of the range of goodies available:

The Doublet - is a slice of previous opal glued onto a backing of non-precious opal variety called "potch", or sometimes glass or ceramic are used as the backing. Tf the slice of precious opal is very thin, the face of the doublet will be flat. If the slice of precious opal is thick enough, the top will be domed, and these are obviously more valuable.

The Triplet - is simply a flat doublet with a domed clear quartz top glued to it. The colour of the thin slice of precious opal is dispersed through the domed face. Its easy to pick a triplet from a doublet - turn it on the side, and you can see the cleanness of the quartz top over the opal.

The Solid Crystal - the connoisseur of opal always purchases a "solid" - and high quality solids are often referred to as "stones". One type is known as the "crystal" opal. These may be light, semi-black or black, depending on the density of the colour. Good crystals may vary in price between $200 and $1800 a carat.

The Solid - is the REAL DEAL - and what "The Ridge" is famous for worldwide. The best ones have a precious opal face and a natural potch backing. Those with light coloured backs are called light opal, with darkish backs as semi-black opal, and those with jet black backs are the famous Lightning Ridge blacks. The blacker the back, the greater the amount of projected colour from within the precious opal. "Stone" of top gem quality can get $3000 per carat.
