From Lismore NSW to Tamworth NSW

Well there are quite a few choices ...and why would you be going that way anyway? Well we were....and you might enjoy driving this 'off the beaten path' route.

This route takes you past Grafton (you just skirt the outskirts of Grafton) to Armidale and then on The New England Highway to Tamworth....this last bit is a well used route.

You need your wits about you if you come into Grafton from 'the back'....and I looked at every round-a-bout seeking a familiar town name so I could say...."Take the second exit" just like the sat-nav lady.
    So here we go........
We drove out of Lismore towards Casino and turned south at the Summerland Way...arriving in Grafton we stayed on the South Grafton side and did NOT drive over the bridge to North Grafton (the main CBD)....nor did we head back to Bangalow...not the way today...nor did we go to Ballina...

I was looking out for a sign that said 'Coutts Crossing' or 'Namboida' two of the towns on the route but 'No'....no luck. Finally when I was about to give up I saw we had a choice to go to Ebor and Ballina...this was it...Ebor was on the way and Ballina a turn off...at last.

Before arriving at Ebor and the Waterfall Way we stopped in Namboida and there was a pub and eating place and accommodation on the banks of the river..Namboida Coaching Inn.....it was obviously a 'known' spot as quite a few folk turned up for a drink and a meal.

It was then on to Ebor and we joined The Waterfall Way and drove into Armidale. From then it was back on the usual track to Tamworth.

The city of Lismore makes an ideal base to stay for a while and go exploring the scenic countryside.

This part of New South Wales usually has lush green paddocks with contented Cows grazing, Macadamia and Stone fruit trees, roadside fruit & vegetable stalls selling fresh produce when in season.

You can enjoy the rainforest at Mt Warning and other places, but if you intend to trek to the top of Mt. Warning you must be early!

There are many small & pretty villages along the way, the Channon is one which is noted for its artistic alternative community. Markets are held at Coronation Park on the second Sunday of each month.

The Protester Falls Picnic Area, which is located in the Terania Creek basin, has a narrow valley of subtropical rainforest and eucalypt forest at the foot of the Nightcap Range. A 1.4-km return walk set amidst beautiful rainforest featuring bangalow palms, leads to Protesters Falls. The fertile soil, together with the state's highest rainfall, have created one of the state's best sub-tropical Rainforests.

You can also drive to Minyon Falls, another pretty waterfall with plenty of wildlife. It really is a lovely area to pay a visit, perhaps take lunch with you and enjoy it with the large Goannas that are always on the look-out for a free feed!

It is hard to choose a route, they are all good!
Drive carefully as some of the roads are narrow and the locals tend to speed!
