Macksville Things to Do

The huge Nambucca River was once the road as boats were the main form of transport. Near the Star Hotel was a public wharf used by steamers which picked up timber and cream from the district.
The River is put to a different use now, as people go sailing, canoeing, jet skiing, waterskiing, rowing and fishing. Boat tours run along the river, and there is a River Festival at the end of November.

We stopped at the Lions park situated the north side of the bridge and located beside the river. The park has free Toilets, Picnic tables, childrens playground, a boat ramp and plenty of free parking.
This is one of the best places for a photo of the bridge.
We stopped for morning tea and had a chat with some fellow travelers doing the same thing.

Located along the Pacific Highway [Cooper street] in the town and next to a service station, is Dawkins park.
The park is a good place for bird watching as it has a lagoon with an island in the centre where many Birds were nesting. Surrounding the water was plenty of mown grass, picnic tables and some pretty Coral trees in bloom. They have a lovely red flower, but the stems are very thorny, so be careful.
My photo shows a huge Ibis next which looks to be shared by three families. Sorry the photo isn't the best.

Macksville has two historic hotels, the Star Hotel on River Street and the Nambucca Hotel on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Wallace Street.

The Star is the one that always grabs my attention, mainy because it's a little way from the highway and because of its position overlooking the River and the bridge.
The Hotel opened its doors in 1885, which now makes it the oldest original Hotel surviving on the North Coast of NSW. In the 2000's, new owners have renovated the hotel, so it now has a nice Beer garden with a roof and some tree ferns giving it a nice atmosphere. The verandahs are beautiful, both upper and lower have lovely lacework balustrades and are just the place for sitting with a Beer in your hand enjoying the sweeping views up and down the Nambucca River, you may even spot a playful Dolphin, as these frequent this River. Inside, there are old photos and an old cedar staircase.

Perhaps you would like to stay in this historic hotel, the prices are reasononable
    Accommodation Room Rates in 2013:
Queen room $80 Single room $50Twin share $70

Lets not forget the meals. Lunch time & Dinner time menus include a childrens Menu. Specials are available for certain days of the week and some include a Beer.
I have added the website menu below.

As we travel along the Pacific highway near Macksville, we notice this area has a few roadside stalls. Banana's were cheap, were grown locally, as was all the other produce. A good place to stock up if your doing your own cooking, nice and fresh! One stall even sold hot cuppas!

Favorite thing: My other favourite thing apart from the nice river, would be that it has an internet cafe....surprise, surprise.
