    If you're coming from Sydney...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're coming from Sydney on public transport, do catch the train. It is a scenic trip at times, especially when you are around the Hawkesbury - Gosford area. The wonderful scenes as you descend the sandstone ramparts before crossing the Hawkesbury and then follow the shoreline for many kilometres before coming to Brisbane Waters makes the trip a delight. You can also catch a float plane from Rose Bay which follows the coast and is also very scenic. There is a reasonable bus network throughout the city and trains to some areas. It's a great town for cyclists also.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Driving to Newcastle from Sydney is about a 2 hour drive north, the drive has its scenic moments, partially mountainous, dont expect good radio reception, this is the flatter scenery to Newcastle.

  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a number of ways to get to Newcastle. Probably the easiest is to drive. Take the Newcastle exit from the freeway from Sydney. Coming from the north, if you are coming along the Pacific Highway, you bipass Raymond Terrace and then head for Hexham. At Hexham, follow the signs to Newcastle. If you are coming along the New England Highway, follow the signs to Sydney and get onto the freeway. Once on the freeway, take the Newcastle exit. You can also get to Newcastle by train. Get off either at Newcastle station (right in the heart of downtown) or Broadmeadow (bigger, Countrylink station). If you have a car, drive. Otherwise, the city buses are pretty good. If you only intend to be in the downtown area, it is small enough to do on foot. Shopping and beaches and restaurants are within a close proximity.

By car , train, bus or...
By car , train, bus or plane. By car it's around two hours from Sydney. Plane about half an hour. Bus around three hours, train 2hours 40mins to three hours (depending on whether you get an express train. Probably by car. The public transport system isn't great.

    Newcastle's Famous Tram
Newcastle has a tram. Well, it's not really a tram. They haven't run here for decades, more's the pity. It does look like a tram though. As in a San Francisco body over a bus. Now you're getting the idea. What it actually does is do guided tours and the man is very good. If you want a history lesson and facts on what's happening, this would be my recommendation.

  • The central Coast has a very good train service. The Inter Urban trains depart from Sydney Central Station every half hour during the day, but they depart more often during peak hours. All Inter Urban trains stop at Gosford. If you travel Off peak, after 9am you will be able to get a cheaper rate ticket. The photo shows three trains,3801, The XPT and you can just spot an Inter Urban in between.

    Sydney to Newcastle.
Other Central Coast Stations are Woy Woy, every half hour. Koolewong,Tascot,Point Clare, every hour. The last 4 stations are "short" stations, and you need to travel in the last carriage.
