  • A pair of thongs or sandals is good in summer as it can get quite hot when you're up at the beach.

    Do bring sunburn cream. If you are from Europe you will get burnt to a crisp if you don't take precautions. Remember, Australia is the melanoma (skin cancer) capital of the world and we don't need you to add to our statistics.

    Polarizing filters are essential if you're taking pictures of the beach.

    The Civic Fountain in Newcastle, it's right next to the station, you can't miss it, and is basically the starting point of many walks around this charming place.

    Beach gear, and sunscreen (you can burn very quickly here). usually our weather obeys the seasonal norms, but occasionally it goes haywire (the two photos were taken from the same spot an hour apart in Sept '04)

    everything is readily available

    same with photo equipment

    plenty of great camping locations in surrounding area so if you're into that sort of thing, go for it

    ..you might want to bring your drinking cap too. We like a beer or two around here
