The Dish is a huge part of Parkes... The radio telescope, known as The Dish, was built in the 1960's and became the leading instrument of its kind in the world...

Have a look around the township of Parkes... It isn't a huge place but there are quite a few shops, pubs, motels etc...

Just off the Newell Highway 20km north of Parkes is the huge 64m diameter Parkes Radio Telescope. It is the 2nd oldest and the 3rd largest single dish, fully steerable radio telescope in the world and is easily spotted from miles around due to the flat terrain in which it is situated.

The first time I’d heard about Parkes was when I saw the excellent and funny film ‘The Dish’ starring Sam Neill in 2000 which was a brilliant account of its crucial role during NASA’s first successful landing on the moon in 1969. After seeing that film I knew I had to see it if I ever made it to OZ!

It is a very imposing structure as you drive up to it and has an excellent visitors centre and shop that chronicles its various achievements other than the Apollo mission and gives an informative and interesting background to Astronomy.

Since commissioning in 1961, Parkes Observatory has been responsible for many World firsts in radio astronomy such as:

The identification of the first known Quasar in 1963.

Mapping of important regions in the galaxy, the Milky Way.

Participating in the NASA Apollo Moon missions (with the world seeing those first steps on the moon from the transmission via the Parkes Radio Telescope), Voyager II encounter of Neptune in 1989; ESO's Giotto Spacecraft encounter of Halleys Comet in 1986; Galileo Spacecraft's exploration of Jupiter and its moons in 1997.

All sky radio surveys of the Southern Skies.

    Pulsar survey work.

    SETI Project Phoenix.

On going search for hidden galaxies using the new 13 Multibeam Receiver.

CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope is the largest and oldest of the eight antennas comprising the 'Australian Telescope National Facility'. The Compact Array of 6 by 22 metres dishes at Culgoora and another at Mopra near Coonabarabran link up the 64 metres Parkes to synthesise a telescope some 300 kilometres across.
