There was a time when 99% of people stuck to the tarred road. City folk don't like dirt generally. It puts dust on their four wheel drives.
However, the proliferation of wineries has made going up country lanes and dead end streets a most enjoyable activity. You have to remember, the wineries here are well past the three figure mark and they extend past the end of the Broke Road all the way into the Upper Hunter and beyond.
The tourist information centre at Cessnock Airport is a good place to start as you can see on a map where you are and then plan your activities. The ones that cater for mass tourism or just a quiet corner where you may be the only person tasting, you decide.
The point I am trying to make here is, don't limit yourself, think outside the square.

    The ferry arrives

Here it is!! The ferry is like an old barge. You drive on and there's plenty of time to get out of your car and check out the view. I definately recommend this way to the Hunter Valley.

If you are travelling by car from Sydney, perhaps on the way back, take a detour and go the Wisemans Ferry way. It is a lovely scenic way to go and this is the beautiful view from the ferry. It takes you across the Hawkesbury river..

many people will get hooked to the wine tasting once they are in Hunter Valley. True, that is why they are in Hunter Valley. But wait! there is something more than just taste the wine. i went to the Hunter Valley Garden after finished the first wine tasting session. i spent an hour or so in the Garden and i just loved it. there are totally 8 theme gardens plus lake walk and orchard. you can spend an hour or two under the sunshine and take pictures or do some picinicing. there are some shops at the village where not far away from the main entrance. you can show your shopping power too!!

adult admission: AUD 19.00 (would be cheaper if you join the day tour, you might got a discount)

    Waiting for the ferry

by aussirose Updated Nov 18, 2005

The ferry takes about 15 minutes to traverse the river. It had only just left the other side and we had to wait in the line up for it to get to our side. Anyway, the view was nice.

The other side of Belford station. Nice red seat! In fact looks pretty neat for in the middle of nowhere!! I wonder if anyone actually catches the train from here?.
