  • Galleries

At times it seems like every second winery has a gallery. Never mind, the more the merrier I say. There's everything from pottery to paintings to pictures to sculpture. Certainly far too many to list here. In my experience, one thing they do have in common is quality.Another thing you will notice in some works is vibrant colour, which is why I have...

  • Drink Wine!

There are lots of wineries in the Hunter Wine Region and impossible to see them all. I think we did five or six one day and then felt we had enough for that day. You will find them all cluttered next to each other all over the valley. We were only able to see a few wineries in Pokolbin, but there are more wineries in Lovedale and other areas. We...

  • Ballooning in the Hunter

Ballooning is very popular in the Hunter. It's lovely viewing the vinyards from the air. I recommend it if you want to to something a little different and romantic. They supplied a certificate and champyne brunch when we finished our flight.

  • Lindemans Winery

I didn't like Lindemans much. It produces some of the most well known wines in Australia. Most Aussies will recognise Lindamans Ben Ean - ultra cheap sweet lolly water :o) But then, each one to his own.

  • McWilliams

McWilliams wines. We had a nice lunch here on the large verandah. McWilliams is a well known winery. I found that the popular ones arn't usually the best, however they have some popular cheepies :o)

We came back to Oakvale for a picnic after buying some cheese and crackers at the cheese factory up the road. Nice with a glass of white. Here's Jesse giving the crackers the taste test.

  • Why mistletoe?

My husband explained that Mistletoe is a parasite plant that attaches itself on trees and eventually kills them. So I was fascinated as to why this winery would call themselves Mistletoe vinyard. When I asked them they said that the whole hill used to be called Mistletoe hill due to the mistletoe in the area. Here is a picture of some mistletoe....

  • Mistletoe winery

Mistletoe Wines. I liked this place because they were unique in that they produced a nice rose wine from shiraz grapes. Also they reckon people come up and buy cases of the stuff near Christmas because it's a nice light easy drink and a great idea for gifts.

Pokolbin Restaurants

  • Great views of the valley

If you want to have a great lunch and splurge, i highly recommend this restaurant. They have a lovely view of vineyards and the valley. The view is not as good as in the photographs, since housing developments are being constructed. Anyway, it's still beautiful. We had probably the best meal of our trip here. For starter, fried zucchini flower...

  • Nice variety, nice atmosphere

Yes, that's its real name in toto. The friendly Rosa runs this establishment and she has come up with success in her first dabble into running-your-own-restaurant.Located in the upper part of the Roche complex to the east of the Hunter Valley Gardens it has lovely views across to Broken Back Range but, I have to be honest, I enjoy the atmosphere...

  • Food with a view

We went in here instead of the more upmarket The Mill Restaurant adjacent because we wanted a quick meal but it's all part of the same complex of the Tuscany Wine Estate, part of Arrowfield Estate. The location is a prime one in these parts with lovely scenic views over to Brokenback Range. Recommend the pizza and the salad. We ordered on spec...

  • Lovely ambience

This is a beautiful folky kind of place. The head chef is responsible for all the painted artwork and funky interior. The food is minimalist and unique, using local ingredients. Their house wines are their own label. Lovely food, but the prices are on the high side. I think the mains were around $32 bucks a person and they aren't huge poritions. I...

It was just across the road from our accommodation at the Hunter Resort, the opposition you could say :o) We liked the thought that we didn't have to travel too far to get home..haha. We stayed at the Hunter Resort and this is the Restaurant on site. This was where we had our yummy hot breakfast every day and we had a dinner here that was very nice a reasonably priced. Please remember that in Australia you can take your own wine to most restaurants that have byo (bring your own) sign and you will save heaps on the cost.

First of all, it's set in the bush and the surroundings could comfortably be labelled "rustic". • Classic meal, classic wine, classic view

As with most restaurants in this area, it caters for the "Sydney market" as we locals like to say. Translated, that means it's more expensive than your local cafe but, what you pay more for is class and ambience. This idyllically situated establishment overlooks a newly created (2003/2004) Greg Norman designed golf course. Since I haven't...

An appendage on the Blaxland's Restaurant is all it is, though the relationship is not entirely happy as you can't buy one of their wines and drink it with your meal if you're dining at Blaxland's.
