Well known but not the best by iandsmith On a scale of the world's best known beaches, this place rates. Waikiki, Ipinema, Malibu. It's up there. If you're there just to sample an Aussie beach then, trust me, it's very average. What it does have on the foreshores though is a well trodden boulevarde with an eclectic mix of eating establishments and second class hotels. Hotels as in accommodation that is. It has a scruffy exterior where dress sense is not the foremost thing in people's minds. After all, the idea is to go an loll around on the beach, have a surf and perve on the opposite sex, activities much indulged in in this part of the world.
The southern side beaches of Sydney are not as spectacular or pretty as the northern side but, if you come from a country where beaches are something of a rarity or you come from a Mediterranean country and think the beaches there are good, then you're bound to like Bondi. It has reliable sand, relatively safe waves (but always be cautious and swim between the flags) and you'll never starve with the swag of eating places to choose from. It's also readily accessible from the city, being the closest beach to the CBD. This is photo taken looking north on an obviously less-crowded day when it was a little overcast. Leave a Comment

north narrabeen beach by laughingsun69 To me these beaches here are the best ive seen anywhere with a few others maybe scattered around australia. One beach that comes to mind is North Narrabeen beach ,it has a reputation among the surfing fraternity being host in the past to world surf titles and many big names have graced these shores .You may come here oneday and the surf depending on weather conditions maybe fairly small but on another day it can be 10 ft barrels which can leave you battered and bruised at other times you may find smooth glassy waves, generally speaking though theres always a designated area for general bathing and thats between the flags which are set up by the beach patrol they only do this where its safe and its the only place that surfers arent aloud. dee why beach by laughingsun69 One of the highlights of Sydney is the beaches , even if your not into getting rolled around in the waves theres nothing like the relaxing atmosphere that seems to intoxicate anyone in the vacinity, my personal favourites are on the north side of sydney which stretch from manly beach to palm beach in the north.
When ever im away from here the ocean is what always drives me back its like a part of my soul, growing up here the people develop a culture and the surf and sand is part of that culture. Leave a Comment

Dee why pool. by laughingsun69 Hi a great thing about the beaches around sydney is that nearly all of them have a public pool and relaxation area which comes in handy if the surf is to big believe me .They are normally 50 metres long so you can do laps or just cool of from the summer heat, they normally have a kiddies pool that isnt as deep and are very clean . Sand castles on Manly beach by linnyloo Manly Beach is one of the best beaches in the Sydney area. Manly is located on a narrow peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water, it offers both harbour and ocean beaches. Manly is a wonderful blend of casual and trendy tastes. It remains the more easygoing of the beaches that line the north coast. The plaza offers shopping and a large variety of places to eat and drink. On weekends and public holidays an outdoor Arts and Craft Market is held in Sydney Road close to the promenade. Visitors will find an abundance of hand-crafted items here. A walk down Manly’s promenade brings one to a breath taking ocean view. The white sands, the surf, the huge Norfolk Pines lining the beach are part of what is so distinctive about Manly. Manly can be reach by many different forms of transport including the Manly Ferries from Circular Quay, which is a really nice scenic half hour trip. We found this man who creates the most incredible sand castles absolutely facinating. He had a book with other castles he has made, often taking the whole day to make it. People give him money for it. Leave a Comment

Bondi Beach by martin_nl Sydney has some of the best beaches I have seen. Most well known are of course Bondi, Manly and Coogee, but others are great aswell. If you do the Bondi to Coogee scenic walk you will also pass beaches such as Bronte and Tamarama. If you do the Manly Scenic walk you will see many beaches along the way in Middle Harbour. North of Sydney are some of the best beached though like Palm Beach. Almost deserted so all for yourself. It is quite a trip to get here though, but it's worth the effort. If you want to know more about both Scenic walks check out my off the beaten path tips. Leave a Comment

by Ronald_T Visit Nielsen Park. It is amazing to find such mix of yesteryear and modern beach culture harmonise here. This area is another example of the beauty and the vastness of the Sydney Harbour, with the right mix of open space and shady reserves, plus one of the best beaches on the harbour. The beach is actually called Shark Beach, though, I'm told a net protects swimmers and there hasn't been a shark attack here for decades. The beach with its open aspect at the head of a small promontory, catching the rolling swell from the harbour, combined with the stronger currents along this side of the harbour, ensures deep, mostly clean water for swimming. The contrast with Clifton Gardens across the way is awesome. The surrounding parkland is a favourite for Sydneysiders with numerous walks out to the rocks and headlands, with broad, spectacular views of the harbour. There's abundance of space and choice of picnic grounds, will it be in the shady park behind the changing rooms or on the open lawn above the beach? Oh, but wait! You can stroll to the pleasant gardens of one of Sydney's most historic sites, Vaucluse House, built in 1827 by William Charles Wentworth and now open to the public. To get there, walk down Greycliffe Avenue and turn left, continuing for two blocks until you see the large park on your right. See for more pics in the City Views travelogue please.

Balmoral Beach... mostly just locals here... by amyhenderson Go to Balmoral Beach (in suburb of Mosman), just a 20min bus trip from the city centre. Go there on a sunny afternoon/evening. There is the best fish and chip shop in Sydney. Sit by the beach watching the sun go down... not a bad way to spend a Summer evening...
Having a weekend breakfast/brunch at a Bondi Beach cafe... Leave a Comment

take the ferry from Circular Quay across to Manly - not only do you get a good, cheap look at the harbour, but there's a nice beach there too. The aquarium there is worth a visit, and there was a good fish and chip shop there last time I went... Leave a Comment

by jrs1234 Take a trip down to Bondi beach. It's a real Australian icon, although remember that if it doesn't suit you, there are lots more beaches to choose from! You might even feel like staying in the area, and there are quite a few places to choose from, especially if you're a backpacker. Whether you stay or not, it's an easy bus ride (or bus + train via Bondi Junction) from the city centre. For the adventurous, try walking from Coogee beach to Bondi (a few hours walk, depending on your pace) - take some water with you and slap on some sunscreen first though! I enjoyed it when I did it, but I was on the verge of heatstroke when I finished - due to a lack of water! Leave a Comment
