Favorite thing:
There's another harbour about 2 hours north of Sydney. It's my home town actually.
This is an eyecatcher at night. This welcoming scupture aimed at seafaring folk casts its genial purple light every night across the waters of the harbour.
Not quite the Statue of LIberty but, we're only a small town by comparison and the French probably don't love us as much (especially since we started making wine seriously).
The statue sits at the eastern extremity of the suburb of Carrington but is visible all the way down the harbour.
It is entitled "Destiny" and is a reminder of the prows that used to grace the sailing ships that once were stacked three deep along the foreshore.
The flowing hair behind her represents the seven seas.

If you enjoy wine and wine tasting, take 1-2 days and explore the numerous wineries in the Hunter Valley. A mere two hour drive north west of Sydney, this wine region is known for its good Shiraz.
TIPS: Some highlight wineries to visit: Brokenwood, Peppertree, Robertsons. For a special meal, try Roberts restaurant (located on the Peppertree wine estate).
If you are a backpacker in need of some extra cash, you could get a job grape picking here. More info and accommodation: http://www.winecountry.com.au/home.htm
Favorite thing:
Of course, you must see the Opera House. For the more adventurous, a bridge climb to the top of the Harbour Bridge is a must! A bit pricey at A$125.
Fondest memory:
While in Sydney, we took a day trip out to the Hunter Valley Wine District. It was a pleasant time with a small group. Fortunately we had a very capable driver. I would have found it very difficult to drive after sampling all the fine wine!
Favorite thing:
Hunter Valley - especially you're a wine lover. (don't drive your own car if you not only want to taste but drink)
Blue Mountains - Not quite far away from the city but it gives you a very stunning landscape.
The Rocks - one of the best conservation works in the world.
