General Sydney/Aussie Customs: Men & Their Games - Chess in Hyde Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Over the last couple of months I've been into town often enough & past this spot right in front of Bar Quattro going into Hyde Park to know that this Chess playing takes place all day. It not only takes place on this large board painted on the concrete, but also on normal sized boards on various tables & even garden benches/seats that are nearby during the busiest time just either side of lunch time. It is around this time that the crowd is also at its peak as workers from nearby offices & businesses come into Hyde Park to have their lunch & get outside. So if you come to Sydney and fancy a game of Chess then get yourself up to Hyde Park as it seems that anyone can join in. And like me, feel free to have either a coffee or lunch or brekkie at one of my Sydney faves Bar Quattro where I get the chance to practice my Itlalian. Ciao! You can find them on the Elizabeth Street side of Hyde Park just opposite the David Jones Store that fronts it & right behind St James Station & Bar Quattro Cafe which is at the back & front left hand side of St James Station.

    Tipping and Prices: Tipping
  • Tip Rating:
  • These days, tipping is expected in most restaurants in Sydney. As a rule leave 10%, but if you really did have bad service and bad food, forget the tip. There are still some people around who think that because waiters are often paid relatively well that a tip is not necessary, but it doesn't hurt to give a "bonus" when you have had an enjoyable experience. It's also easier to round up the taxi fare for a taxi driver to the nearest $1.00 or add a couple of dollars extra, but if the driver gives you the run around and "pretends" he doesn't know the quickest route or gets lost - do not pay a cent more than you have to! I also find that it is appreciated when you give the hairdresser a couple of extra dollars for a good haircut.

General Sydney/Aussie Customs: THE COLOR OF MONEY
  • Tip Rating:
  • Australian dollars (AUD) are all different colours! The lowest denomination dollar bill note is $5.00 and it's purple The $10.00 note is blue The $20.00 note is orange The $50.00 note is dark yellow and the $100.00 note is green Unfortunetly I don't know the colours of the notes over $100, but I bet they sure are pretty. Coins come in the denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 cent pieces (silver), followed by gold $1.00 coins and $2.00 coins. 1 cent coins no longer exist and were phased out about 10 years ago. Festivals: gay & lesbian mardi gras

every year in the first weekend of march, the gay and lesbian mardi gras hits sydney in a big way! over 500,000 people pack the streets to watch the colorful parade of people celebrating their sexuality. it's a huge flurry of costumes, color and elaborate displays, also with many important messages, esp. those of respect and tolerance. it was such a great night, i made friends with some dutch girls, some french tourists and a british couple. everyone was outdoors on this beautiful balmy night enjoying the parade and being HAPPY! the whole month leading up to the mardi gras is the gay & lesbian cultural month. there are numerous things going on in sydney, from gay theatre performance, to conventions, to film nights. you can grab a copy of the official G&L mardi gras handbook for free leading up to the event, for a full listing of the numerous events on offer. please check out the travelogue to see more drunken dodgy photo moments from the mardi gras!

Historical: discovery of australia as we know it!
  • Tip Rating:
  • it was good old captain cook that discovered the sydney area in 1788. he landed in botany bay at a spot called la perouse, and proclaimed australia as a british colony. little did they know that the dutch discovered it like 200 years earlier on the west coast, but they were too bloody slow to stake their claim! the statue of captain cook can be found in hyde park. you can also go to botany bay and see some of the early convict history there.

General Sydney/Aussie Customs: KEEP LEFT IN OZ
  • Tip Rating:
  • It all starts with driving on the left side of the road, while sitting in the drivers seat on the right hand side of the car. If you're like me you have to constantly remember to walk to the left on public walkways, escalators, stairs. There are even signs on the street corners in the CBD reminding you to look left. I never even gave escalators a second thought until I started to get on the wrong side! While I know I need to keep left, it is easier said than done and I have to keep saying to myself "Keep left, keep left, keep left"

    ANZAC Day: anzac spirit
  • Tip Rating:
  • anzac day is recognised every year on april the 25th, as a time to reflect for the brave soldiers who fought in the world wars, and even for those who fight today. the anzac memorial in hyde park is simply beautiful, with calming waters and beautiful trees surrounding it. you can enter and pay your respects any time of the year, but it will be in april that the monument will see most of its offerings of rememberance. lest we forget...

    General Sydney/Aussie Customs: Fisherman's Dream!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Because Sydney is so coastal... there are plenty of fishing HOT Spots. Personally we both like to fish and do it often. The "REAL" Fisherman come out at nights, so the only people you will see on the roads in the early mornings are the true fisherman. You need a Fishing License to fish in Sydney. It can be purchased at any local gas station for a small fee. If you are caught without a liscence they will fine you.

    Drinks and Food: Aussie Pies
  • Tip Rating:
  • From a foreign perspective, it seems to me that Aussie pies are the best-known example of Aussie cuisine. For the benefit of those from Roxboro, Aussie pies hand-held savoury pastries made with all manner of meat, carrots, English peas, potatoes, and possibly other vegetables. It's rather like the American pot pie, but this can be hand held. Mind the filling as it could be hot.
