The Australian Culture is now near, pure American. The US FOrces had a terrific impact on us during WW2. Had it not been for The United States of America, we, as a nation were nearly finished. The Japanese force the attacked Pearl Harbour, 7 December 1941, attacked and destroyed the town of Darwin on our NW coast 4 months later. We who lived through and survived WW2 have a great respect and love for The United States of America, forget the politicians and government squabbles, WE Aussies Love you Yanks.
Well if your gay and im not .there is heaps for you to do as Sydney is the Gay capital of Oz .From my point of view Sydney is fast paced not really as friendly as other Australian citys.Restaurants are of world standard, clubs are great but as a rule Sydney people think they are the cream of Australia and can be at times very rude and un helpful towards tourist. That is the only down fall you could have here as there is a fantastic amount of things to do but just remember, this is the most stuck up place in Australia .The place where the idea of the lay back aussie isn't always the case.best comparison would be central london even though it is not as busy.Below is a photo of my friend Audra from new york at Darling Habour this pic was taken in december 1999
Aussie people just love it! And the ocean with its waves seems to invite everyone for a surf. I didn't dare trying yet... Looks like fun but maybe I'm just not brave enough:)
The normal way of mixing hot and cold water to get warm water instead of freezing or burning your hands isn't known everywhere!
In Australia they drive on the left, like in the UK. But there the similarity ends. Road signs, layout and just about everything else auto seems to be american. Weird!
If an Aussie man/woman comments on your thong, please note, he/she is not being overly friendly - a thong is in fact Aussie-speak for flip-flops.
And last but not least, learn some important Aussie slang. Why? So you won't look lost when an Aussie is trying to chat with you.
