Different Drummer: Different Drummer, in Glebe
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Different Drummer is a quirky cocktail & tapas bar, and restaurant located on Glebe Point Road. The bar area is located just off the street, with the restaurant to the rear, and there is also a function room upstairs. I have been here for both tapas and cocktails. My latest visit was just for a couple of drinks, the timing happily coincided with happy hour, where you can sample 2 for 1 cocktails. There is a small list of the usual suspects with a couple of specialties thrown in. I was drinking with my sister and we sat right at the front of the bar, looking out the open window onto the street, enjoying the hustle and bustle of Glebe Point Road, but not the noisy buses. On my previous visit to a Different Drummer I went for dinner and had a selection of tapas. I wasn't that impressed with the selection or the dishes....certainly not on par with the real thing in Spain. Perhaps best to stick to the cocktails.

    Scruffy is acceptable

The Australian Youth Hotel: The Australian Youth Hotel, in Glebe
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Australian Youth Hotel, or Aussie Youth as the locals call it, is a friendly pub located in Glebe, not far from the Broadway Centre. It is the local pub of my sister Alison's work, and her and her colleagues always seem to be down at the 'Youth for after work drinks or lunching for someone's birthday. There is a bar area downstairs, and a restaurant upstairs. From all reports the food is pretty good. You can also order bar snacks to have downstairs. I have been in there a couple of times to meet Alison after work for a drink. I like the relaxed atmosphere of this pub and the fact that my sister seems to know all the staff and clientele doesn't hurt either.

    Nothing special

Sydney City Bars / Clubs: Establishment
  • Tip Rating:
  • We came here our last night to meet up with Laura and her co-worker. I absolutely loved this place. Upon entering the Establishment you are greated with a huge open space and even larger marble bar. The bar is dimly lite with "side" bars (instead of tables) where you can enjoy your drink. They play nouvo tech music which isn't as loud as most places so you can sit back sip your wine and enjoy a good conversation with friends. We ordered a few bottles of an Australian wine. Sorry, can't remember the name of the wine, but is was scrumptious!!

I crowd that night seemed mostly the after work type, with suits and office attire, baiscally well dressed, casaul business, smart casual. I didn't notice anyone with sneakers or jeans. I am sure that stylish jeans with some great sandals or shoes would fit right in.

Darling Harbour / Cockle Bay / King St Wharf: Scene of VTers Meeting
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not a bad spot in a nice setting overlooking the water. Think you'd need to be in a group to get the most enjoyment out of this place. There was a table of 3 women by themselves sitting right next to us & one of them was good enough to take a few photos for us using each of our cameras, however most groups seemed to be mixed groups of men & women just out enjoying themselves in a normal sort of way after a hard day's work. Mind you I think Saturday night is the big night partying here with DJ's rocking the house from 8 p.m till late. We sure had a good time provided by the interaction of friendly VTers. Sue (sue_stone), Dean (Groverdean), Elzbieta (Ela_S) had continued on from lunch at the Blackbird Cafe farther back around the Bay. We were joined by firstly Sheryn (Zanzibargirl) then Paula (emerald125), Deana (Deana) & for a short while Michael (AYankinSydney) who had to rush off fairly soon with a bottle of J'Adore perfume to meet a friend. He had us wondering. All these people were good company & it was good to see Sydney VTers coming out to socialise. Hope we can do it again sooner rather than later.

No set dresscode, but most people had come straight from work so were fairly well dressed without going over the top.

Fox & Lion Bar & Restaurant: Partying After a Swans Home Game

Well you VTers will be keeling over from shock. Here's Doug who never has a Nightlife tip now has not one, but two for Sydney. Alas though this is not from personal experience. That is apart from having walked past here & seen it all for myself many times over the last 7 footie seasons after Swans games. This is the main place where those fans without families either go to celebrate a win (like today with a crusing 70+ point win over Hawthorn) or drown their sorrows & analyse what went wrong & how the umpires robbed as yet again with some amazingly bad & biased decisions. lol! As well as being able to drink the night away you also have a range of dining choices. After all it is a Bar & Restaurant. Again I can't recommend it to you personally, but I know it offers a rang of cuisine in its Bistro/Cafe such as Chinese, Italian, Modern Australian, Pizza or Woodfire Pizza & Thai. As with Bungalow8 this also would be a place best enjoyed with a group of friends.

There isn't a special dress code here, but of course you wouldn't want to turn up dressed like some sort of yobbo. Everyone looks neat enough, but most are dressed to impress, well not the men anyway.

The Marble Bar has a long history dating back from 1893. Decoration of the Marble bar, (a part of the Adams Hotel), was nothing short of breathtaking and was ornately decorated in the Italian Renaissance style. Corinthian columns with solid bronze capitals, 100 tonnes of the world's best quality marble from Belgian and African quarries, cedar joinery and stained pictorial glass frames are combined to create an opulent ambience unheard of in the colonies at that time. After years of colourful history, in 1968 the Bar received an "A" rating from the National Trust of Australia, and the entire structure was carefully dismantled, refurbished and rebuilt inside the Hilton Sydney. The grand re-opening was in 1973. (Some of this information obtained from the official website).

We stopped by after spending the whole afternoon shopping and walking around Sydney. I enjoyed my Appletini. A live band plays here but I am not sure what days.

  • This place is very cool. I am nearly embarrassed to admit it being that it was in the guide book. Ok. Didnt know when we went. Found it after the fact. But really. Went there to meet a friend and her friend. Had a great time. Super cool place that reminds me of Milion in Buenos Aires.

Fashionable is best for this place. Although jeans do work at least early in the week.

  • pretty much always guaranteed a seat whether it be on their lounges or tables and chairs. lychee and guava daiquiris whether frozen or muddled a definate must. cocktails only served upstairs so best get a seat upstairs less you'll be trudging up and down all night. however, there are bar people on the prowl to take drink orders. very much convenient and welcome service. sports bar downstairs with pool tables, upstairs the lounge and restaraunt with a mini dancefloor and dj set. mostly dance and house. great loos. love the tiles! the downstairs one however, is about 3 flights of stairs down so if your a bit tipsy, best avoid the downstairs loo hehe. cute barmen but what decent bar in sydney doesn't? 20 - 30 something crowd. friday nights a lot of corporate/office types as is any place friday night =P

  • Another of the many nightlife spots that doubles as after work in this town. Came here on a Saturday night in the middle of winter. And still it was 75 (24C). Right above the aquarium it is easily located and a good place to be. Just dont forget to bring your ID or an out of towner. Seems either can get you in.

Opera House / Harbour Bridge: balmy summer nights in sydney
  • Tip Rating:
  • the circular quay, opera house area was buzzing on a beautiful balmy summers night. i had just flown in after a 4 hour flight, and just couldn't sleep, i was too excited and the weather was too nice to be stuck indoors! so i sat on the steps of the opera house, listened to some funky dj music playing in an open bar nearby, and took in the amazing views. that was until the stampede of people coming out from an opera house performance spoiled the tranquility momentarily!
