Live Music, Sydney
With Sydney being a major city of the Asia Pacific Rim it stands to reason there would be a very good music scene with some great live performances.
Check out this link for the latest in live gigs.
I don't know a lot about clubbing or pubbing in Sydney. If it's anything like Melbourne, just go pretty much anywhere in the City and you'll have a ball... Ask around at the backpackers places, and generally you'll get an idea where things are happening...
If you want to find out what's on and where to go there are a few local papers that will give you all the goss.
Drum Media, DB & Revolver are free weekly music papers that can be picked up from music stores and newsagents. Keep your eye out for them.
You will find other free papers in cafes. There are too many to mention. Also look at the posters. If you don't know what the band is like, ask someone.
If you are interested in seeing live bands (local and international) go to the following venues. If you are unsure who the band is ask the venue what they sound like.
I find The Basement one of the coolest live music venues in Sydney. It really reminds me of an old European or New York style club. It's small, yet the atmosphere attracts are more sophisticated clientele.
There are many tables available so you may sit and watch/listen to the band. You can also stand near the bar if you don't find a table. It can get quite crowded on a good night, so it's adviseable to get there early if you can so you may find a table.
You may also buy tickets to certain events, book a table and have a meal. I think it's a nicer way to see a band play their music.
The clubs hosts numerous styles of music genres, such as Jazz, Rock, Pop, Folk, etc.
Dress Code: Casual or smart casual.
The Basement is a nice place to spend an evening listening to local and international bands. You can book ahead of time for a dinner and show package otherwise you may need to wait for a table...they generally do not make dinner reservations only.
Dress Code: Smart casual.
The Pearl Jam show otherwise known as Seattle Jam.. are a great band to see when in sydney, thats if your into Pearl Jam.
The lead singer sounds just as good as the real thing... Eddy Vedder.
Dress Code: Depends where the gig is, i suggest guys where a collar especially if its in a club of any kind.
