Oatley Park, on the Georges River southern suburb of Sydney is a lovely surprise for people. Away from the hustle and bustle of the town you can almost imagine that you are right out in the bush........which indeed you are while driving in the park.

This unique kiosk, come lookout is situated on the central stairway to the beach.

    Beaches: Beautiful Cronulla
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heading further south along the coast, you come to Cronulla.
Cronulla is situated 26 km by road, 35 km by suburban train south of Sydney. It is on the shores of Bate Bay a small indentation of the Pacific Ocean.
Cronulla is part of Sutherland Shire, one of the forty Local Government Areas of Metropolitan Sydney.

As you'll learn from one of my "to do" tips, a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney is a must. For our family, it's almost religion to spend quite time exploring a lovely green oasis in the center of a major city.

One of the more interesting things about the Royal Botanical Garden is the colony of "flying fox" bats. Located in the trees just beyond the Lion's Gate, you can hear them squeaking in the distance as you approach their little forest. At first, you don't realize what you're seeing and hearing... but all of a sudden, you find yourself in a sea of bats. Thousands of them, all over the sky. And, there's even more of them hanging upside down in the trees, getting some daytime shut-eye.

...just another interesting and slightly unusual aspect to the Sydney Royal Botanical Gardens experience.

Beaches: Alternative to Bondi and other Well-known beaches
  • Tip Rating:
  • To be honest, I'm not sure what this beach is like right down on it, but from up above it sure looked lovely. I was with a friend who was have a practice at the Mosman Neutral Beach Rifle Range, and went to look out at the view from up there. I was amazed to see this lovely beach.

One of the most famous and advertised views of Sydney can be had from "Mrs. MacQuarie's Chair". (See my separate "to do" tip on the subject) Millions of tourists have snapped photos of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, as viewed from the chair.

But, what about the scene from the other side of the looking glass? The accompanying photo shows the pleasing greenery of Mrs. MacQuarie's Chair/Point, as photographed from the edge of the Sydney Opera House.

So, going Humphrey Bogart on Mrs. MacQuarie's Chair, "here's looking at you, kid".

    Suburbs: Abyss Scuba Diving
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney's underwater environs are as spectacular as its above-sea landmarks, if you know where to dive in.
The Captain Cook National Park at Kurnell offers a number of dive sites including:

    The Leap
Normally done as a drift back into the bay this dive has a maximum depth of 21m. During the dive you will see a large number of seadragons, some great sponge gardens and if you look closely a number of seahorses.
    Cape Solander
This dive offers the clearest water in the area. With a maximum depth of 25m this site has some spectacular sceenary. Can only be dive when the seas are very flat and is not a site for inexperienced divers. This site is one of the best in Sydney.
    The Monument
The Monument is a very easy dive site. Due to its location right in the bay viz can be a little worst here than other sites around Kurnell. But it is still a very nice relaxing dive with usually lots to see including a large population of weedy seadragons. Maximum depth 14m.
    The Steps
With a maximum depth of 14m this site is a great dive site, especially if you want to see Weedy Seadragons. The sponge gardens in the area a very extensive and this is an easy dive which can be done on a regular basis.

    Suburbs: An old cemetary
  • Tip Rating:
  • 1849, Moreton Bay Fig Tree - Sydney
    1849, Moreton Bay Fig Tree

This may sound a bit odd, but in Newtown, there is an old historical cemetaryin St Stephens Churchyard.
This cemetary was established in 1849.At the entrance , is one of the largest Moreton Bay fig-trees that I have ever seen. This also was planted in 1849.
Amoung the graves are some of Australia's earliest settlers including one Eliza Emily Donnithorne.
Charles Dickens brother ,apparently lived in Sydney and Dickens paid a visit and met Miss Donnithorne, who was jilted on her wedding day and spent the rest of her life in her wedding dress.Dickens must have been fascinated by this story as she became the model for Miss Haversham in Great Expectations.
Currently ,this place is often used as a background in movies such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Scenic Walks: Shelley Beach, a little paradise just 20mins city!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shelley Beach is a much smaller, more secluded beach to its well-known neighbour, Manly Beach.

From the South-end of Manly, one can take a coastal walk of about 10mins around to Shelley Beach.

There is also a great cafe on the way that has beautiful fresh seafood and their weekend breakfasts are popular too!

Catch a ferry to Manly then walk

Sydney Harbour Bridge: UNDER The Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge gets a lot of attention. However, very few people actually realize that there's actually something worth exploring beneath it! If you do make your way under the southern approach to the bridge (that's the main city side), you'll find an archaeological dig and a site of an old fort that used to exist there up until it was demolished to make way for the bridge. The fort used to be one of the primary defenses of the city, and several of the cannons that did their part in the city's defense are still there, together with information about the fort, the dig, and other historical aspects of the little swath of land in its pre-bridge days.

Scenic Walks: Walk Along The Stunning Sydney Harbour
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Scenic Manly Walk is a 10km long rather challenging walk from the Spit Bridge through the Sydney Harbour National Park to Manly . It was one of the highlights of my stay in Sydney!
The clearly marked trail leads you through a magnificent and changing landscape up and down the hills. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the walk and avoid the midday heat. Take your swimmers with you, there are some marvellous beaches along the trail. And look at my Travelogue for more pictures!
