Beaches: Flying - At Dolls Point
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just one of the many activities you see people enjoying at Dolls Point.
This particular day was incredibly windy, and these were the only people we saw out there, besides us ofcoarse.. and we stayed only a few minutes..
A few days later the winds become a big problem in the Sydney area, causing widespread damge and a fatality.

    Beaches: Elle Mc.Pherson's Hometown
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Beaches of Cronulla, North to South ... Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla and Cronulla.
This town sure is beautiful, and a holiday destination in it's own right.
It gives the impression of being a lovely seaside resort, not huge by any means, and the beaches are suitable for many varied watersports, especially surfing and body boarding.
I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine a young 'Elle' sunbathing on these beaches.

Wineries: Hunter Valley wineries - 3hrs north of Sydney
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have got this tip on my must see activities because it's not too far from Sydney and if you're a wine lover, a trip to Sydney is not a trip without doing the Hunter Valley wines, even if it's just for a tourist day trip. I have also put this tip on my off the beaten track because if you have a bit more time, then a few days in the Hunter Valley is well worth it. We went for a week and stayed at the Hunter Valley Resort and had a great holiday. You might want to check it out on my Pokolbin pages.

    Historic Buildings: Kirribilli House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kirribilli House is the city residence of the Australian Prime Minister ~ I have to admit I was surprised how close we could get to it. Obviously, you can't enter, but it's a pretty lot and home. . .the lush green landscape in the neighbouring area is also lovely to wander.

National Parks / Parks / Gardens: Close your eyes and imagine 1965
  • Tip Rating:
  • Now place yourself in the Royal National Park in Sutherland, Sydney...........perhaps near Garie or Wattamolla Beaches.

I have had a lovely time this week locating a box of slides of places taken when I was younger. Way back then I had a slide viewer, but that disappeared somewhere off the beaten track and so I didn't know what I would find when I had a few of them printed. Some more are in a travelogue here.

I just popped into the link, (below) and it is fantastic.......shortly I will do another trip down memory lane and check the whole link out.

National Parks / Parks / Gardens: Take a trip to the Royal National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • The link below will tell you how to get there, what you need to take and how long you would need to set aside to do it justice. I must admit that I was very impressed by the site and the information. If you do this side trip from Sydney, you might then understand why I used to visit there so much when I lived in Sydney and why I think that it is something not to be missed by visitors.

National Parks / Parks / Gardens: Flying Foxes in the Domain Botanical Gardens

  • I'm batty about these guys... - Sydney

There is a huge colony of fruit bats that lives in the botanical gardens. They seem to congregate in the trees around the main restaurant and it is an impressive sight watching them roost high above in the trees.

They are a very social animal with a complex heirarchy and it is great to watch them chattering away, preening themselves, fight for a good spot or just hang there asleep cocooned in their leathery wings...

Perhaps one of the most amazing sites is their nightly journey to find food each night at dusk as they head south out of the city in a seemingly endless and silent stream - I could watch that for hours and it does almost seem to take that long for them to pass over. A perfect viewing spot is on William St just by the Cook Philip Aquatic Centre.

There is however a certain amount of controversy over their living in the Domain as they are slowly denuding the trees they roost on of their leaves and the park rangers want to get rid of them. Strangely enough, they also inhabit the botanical gardens of Melbourne, where there they have begun a capture and release programme to move them to another prepared site.

    Beaches: Cobbler's Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cobbler's Beach is a legally designated nude beach on Middle Head which juts out into Sydney Harbour. It is a small beach. As it is on the harbour it is not a surf ocean beach like Werrong I described elsewhere. Middle Head is on the north side of the harbour close to the neighborhood of Mosman, a very well-to-do area. The crowd at Cobbler's is mostly males weekdays but weekends the beach can be absolutely packed with a mixed crowd of families, couples and single girls and guys. The sand fills quickly so get there early. A grassy area behind the beach can accomodate dozens of sunbathers. A visiting boat lands ashore in season and sells ice cream! It is a fun sight to see a queue of naked beachgoers with money in hand waiting their turn to buy something. Nude weddings have been held at Cobbler's!

    Getting there:

By auto from the city go over the Sydney Harbour bridge and exit at Neutral Bay via Military Rd. (Rt. 14) Follow this to Spit Junction and continue on to Mosman Junction. Continue straight through and just after Raglan Rd. bear left onto Middle Head Rd. This turns into Chowder Bay Rd. After about 100 m. you will see HMAS Penguin navy facility on left and beyond it on left a parking area for Middle head sports oval. Walk across oval (or go around if a game on) and find trail down to beach.

By bus take bus 244 from Wynyard Station in the city. When you get on ask driver if he is going to Middle Head oval. This route does not run on Sunday. On Sunday take route 227-Mosman Junction, or less good, 230 or 243-Spit Junction. These put you two or three km away from the oval but if you are in shape it is not bad to walk. Mosman has a grocers for picnic stuff for the beach (IGA) and heaps of trendy shops and cafes to visit after the beach and a very nice public library. Sydney is close to several outstandingly beautiful national parks.

One of the most striking in terms of terrain and remoteness is the Budawang National Park just 3-4 hours down the South Coast from Sydney by car.

It is an area of rugged cliffs, beautiful rivers and cool rainforests and an area that is set far enough back from the main roads that it doesn't get that many visitors and it is possible that you might not see anyone else during your time here.

If you would like to know more about this magnificent bushwalking region, check out my Budawang Range VT Page

The Blue Mountains are one of the favourite tourist destinations for a day trip outside of Sydney as they are so easy to get to, being only a couple of hours away by car or train!

The train is probably the main way tourists get there and a return ticket costs only AU$13.60 for a return from Central Station to Katoomba. Watch out for the bus guided tours, which cost a lot more - one of my friends took this after forgetting my advice and felt a little ripped off when he realised how much more he'd spent getting there...

Once arriving at Katoomba, you can either take an enjoyable walk through the Art Deco heart of the pleasant town of Katoomba down to the main attraction of The Three Sisters, or you can take a hop on hop off Tram that does a big circuit of all the main points of interest - I say get a tram ticket, as it is an enjoyable way to see the sights!

Conveniently for tourists, the main attractions are all around The Three Sisters rock formation in a sort of tastefully done 'theme park'...

    These include:

    The Scenic Railway

    The Skyway

    The Visitor Information Centre

    The Three Sisters

    The Edge Maxvision Cinema

    And the Katoomba Falls Reserve

Of course, Katoomba is not the be all and end all of the Blue Mountains as there is a huge array of sights further afield, if you have more than just a day to explore...

Please check out my Blue Mountains VT page for further information on this wonderful and easily accessible tourist mecca.
