Blue Mountains: Katoomba
  • Tip Rating:
  • Katoomba has become a major tourist resort. Nearby is the Katoomba Scenic Railway which is located on the site of abandoned coal mines. You can get spectacular views while suspended in a cable car 200 metres above the valley floor. Katoomba is famous for the Three Sisters, a spectacular rock formation on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Jamison Valley. The legend goes that 3 sisters fell in love with 3 brothers from another tribe and tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers decided to use force to capture the sisters causing a major tribal battle. A witchdoctor decided to turn the 3 sisters into stone to protect them from harm. He intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over but he was killed and no other could do the reversal and so the sisters remain in their rock formation.

    Blue Mountains: The Scenic Railway
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Scenic Railway was built in 1878 to service a coal mine in the Jamison Valley. Over the years the railway was also used to convey coal and shale from the Ruined Castle area and Megalong Valley. It is a unique ride through a tunnel in the side of the mountain then a hair-raising descent of 415 metres at a maximum grade of 52 degrees which passes an ancient rainforest area before reaching the Jamison Valley. The Scenic Railway is the world's steepest incline railway and carries more than 850,000 passengers a year.

    Blue Mountains: The Skyway
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Skyway is Australia's only horizontal passenger carrying cable car. You can find it at the same site as the Scenic Railway. A 7 minute scenic ride takes you 350 metres across a deep gorge. A bit unnerving but the scenery is fantastic.

Blue Mountains: After a time in a vivid and...
  • Tip Rating:
  • After a time in a vivid and active city of Sydney you should not miss the opportunity to visit a truly natural masterpiece - Blue Mountains National Park. There is a real cheap train connection from Sydney to Katoomba, a capitol of Blue Mountains. If you decide to rent a car or hitch-hike, take a chance to stay in a Hawkesbury Heights YHA. There you will be able to enjoy a real family like atmosphere with a fantastic view. In a house with only 6 rooms, a spacious kitchen and living room and a remarkable terrace you will feel like a king for just over 10 AUD per night. Some of the best hiking tours in Blue Mountains are: Three Sisters, Grand Canyon and Grosse Valley (from Neates or Glenn point to Evans lookout), Nature track (from Conservation Hut, Wentworth pass, National pass, Wentworth falls, Overcliff pass or Short cut track back to Conservation Hut), Euroka Cleering – to name only a few. Do you like picnics and a barbecue? Then Euroka Cleering is just waiting for you – you will be able to enjoy a romantic stay in a very neat picnic place with kangaroos jumping just meters from you; also you will be able to spend a night in (your own) tent. Impressive. Wherever you go in Blue Mountains, you will probably not be disappointed. But be warned: not all the tracks are very well marked, therefore you can get lost quite easily. Although there are usually enough visitors you can meet, there is still a wilderness and getting off the marked tracks is not recommended. Snakes, small lizards, spiders or leeches are quite common. Always carry a good map, enough water and do not play a hero unnecessarily.

I had the luck of having a friend that lives near the blue mountains, so I got to see parts where there are no tourist, so if you meet some Ozzies and they want to take you to the blue mountains, go because you will see much more, so much more.

Blue Mountains: A little over an hour away...
  • Tip Rating:
  • A little over an hour away from Sydney city center by private car. Explore the Blue Mountains National Park...a range of mountains famous for spectacular views and waterfalls with charming small towns of Katoomba and Leura in the vicinity. Experience what 'bush walking' is...see beautiful waterfalls, flora and fauna... then get to ride the worlds steepest furnicular (90 degrees!)...scary but fun!

Blue Mountains: MOUNTAIN RANGES & WALKING...
  • Tip Rating:
  • MOUNTAIN RANGES & WALKING TREKS: If you are looking for some excellent 'bushwalking' or hiking, Sydney can be a brilliant base. The Blue Mountains are quite accessible, by car or train (about 2 hours), but the whole city is surrounded by vast national parks that are big enough to get completely lost in - so do be sensible. Beyond 2 hours of Sydney, you can also find more remote and equally impressive national parks that are much more quiet and peaceful. The picture below was taken in the Warrumbungles National Park, about 450km north west of Sydney in a semi-arid part of New South Wales. For further information on the abundant wildlife and incredible scenery in this area, check out my travelogue.
