Make sure to take a jumper, umbrella and/or a raincoat because the weather can be rather erratic, even in summer.
You can buy everything you need there. As in the whole of Australia, you now have to ask for paracetamol over the counter.
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses - that sun gets pretty hot. Leave a Comment

An umbrella - although the weather is generally great in Sydney, when it rains, it can really rain! It can still be warm at the same time, even in winter, though so an umbrella is usually better than a raincoat. Leave a Comment

During the summer months (Nov-Jan), bring light clothing ie tshirts, shorts....Winter months (mid-year) it doesnt snow, so jumpers, jackets are more than adequate.
Shouldnt be a problem getting new batteries or films for your camera or video camera...Available in most shops. Leave a Comment

Do you want a mobile phone (cell phone)? If so, there is a Vodaphone store in the arrivals level of Sydney airport (international terminal) that rents them. Leave a Comment

If you want internet access, no need to pack a laptop computer. There are plenty of internet cafes, especially on George Street. The rates are among the cheapest in the world. A$1 would be enough to check e-mail, some news, or other things. Leave a Comment

There is a TRS scheme where you can receive a refund of GST tax for purchases over $300 in one store (purchased at different times on different receipts). These items must be carried in one's hand luggage according to the brochures. One must keep the tax invoices (all the receipts I got were labelled as receipt/tax invoice). Leave a Comment

Unless one has very special requirements, film developing is cheap in Sydney. Many chemist advertise A$6.95 for 27 exposures developed the next day. No need to bring the film home for developing.
Don't even try to bring food to Australia. They x-ray every bag with the exposure settings optimised for food. I brought a biscuit from the airplane and they caught me. I had to explain that I completed the customs declaration when I checked in for the flight and the biscuit was given to me on the airplane afterwards. I did not think that joking was wise so I didn't say something like 'I thought a criminal past is a requirement for entry into Australia hence the smuggled food.' Leave a Comment

If your on a long haul flight take plenty of reading matter, theres only so many movies you can stand!
The neck support rests that you can buy from Airport terminals look invaluable, I saw several people managing to get a few hours kip while we were unable to due to aches and pains!
Plenty of Mosquito repellent! Plenty of Sun Tan Lotion (see Pic)
Digital camera very useful, for VT users! Leave a Comment
