Southern Suburbs Restaurants: Indonesian Feast
  • Tip Rating:

  • If you're looking for Indonesian food, the best place is Anzac Parade, near the roundabout.
Mainly frequented by the local Indonesian community and the odd bule like me, it's has to be authentic.
There are several restaurants catering to different palates, including Palembang fish cake.
How much you want to spend is up to you, but I went there with 2 other people and we had a BIG feast for 50 dollars.

Any, if eaten Indonesian style with your fingers. Some of the restaurants will allow you to do this, but ask first.

We met VT member llauraa for dinner one evening at the Blackbird Cafe. The site was Laura's recommendation, and what a splendid choice it was. The Blackbird is upscale and yet unpretentious. The menu is exciting and still comfortable. You'll find all sorts of interesting twists on old favorites, and you'll find your old favorites, too. And, there's the lovely view looking out onto Darling Harbour and the Cockle Bay Wharf area.

The service is efficient and quite affable. This is the sort of place where you'll eat excellent food and still joke around with the waiters. All in all, the best of all worlds. Without sounding trite, the Blackbird might just be the perfect combination of Commander's Palace (New Orleans, LA USA) and a Denny's Diner. Summing up, we really, really had a nice time.

    Perfect choice and recommendation, Laura.

The menu is so very eclectic and entertaining. Here are a few items to ponder...

(I had the...) Char grilled Thai beef on glass noodle salad, with Thai basil and roasted peanuts. (A$ 14.90)

(My wife and daughter had the....) Simple fish 'n chips. Fish of the day in a crispy beer batter w/lemon and sauce tartare. (A$ 15.90)

(Laura had the....) Red lentil Dahl with hot stone bread, tomato and mint salsa and yogurt raita (A$ 7.90) NICE LIGHT VEGGIE dish!

    Some other good stuff included...

Tasmanian mussels in tomato sauce + grilled casalinga bread

Pan-seared wild salmon fillet w/roasted eggplant, garlic mash (Aussie for mashed potatoes), & puttanesca sauce

Char-grilled octopus w/black bean sauce and asian greens over jasmine rice

Warm prawn wonton salad w/fresh tofu, mixed leaf, light soy and sesame seed dressing.

HOT STONE PIZZAS, among the types were margharita, pumpkin (those Aussie and their pumpkin...), Nicoise, Saltimbocca, and Aztecan (chorizo, jalapenos, fresh tomato, red/yellow capsicum and spanish onion over mozarella and napoli base!!)

    Great coffee treats included..
Irish (Jamesons), Mexicano (Kahlua), Jamaican (Tia Maria, mon), Irish Monk (Baileys and Frangelico), and Italiano (Amaretto)

They have some really nifty "house special cocktails", too..

SWEET NOVEMBER..bacardi, massenez ginger liquer and fresh mint, shaken with limonata

GIRLY DRINK...passion fruit, 42 below, peach schnapps, topped with guava and cranberry juice, mixed with mint.

MISTER GREEN...42 Below and midori muddled with fresh kiwi fruit. Topped with cloudy apple juice.

Desserts? How about baked ricotta cheesecake with summer berry compote? Or, devil-liscious chocolate mud cake with chocolate sauce and ice cream? Or, sticky date pudding w/butterscotch sauce and double cream? And, I'm always a sucker for blueberry cheesecake...this one came with whipped chantilly cream.

We had walked past this place several times before we finally stopped in. After all it is just a couple doors down from the Simpson’s. Each and every time it was jammed packed. Always so busy, breakfast lunch and dinner, that one wondered if a table could be had.

A fairly dark place they have the menu written up on a blackboard in Italian. They come around and seem to take joy in having to explain it all to you. So they did seem disappointed when we knew what we wanted and ordered it without the whole thing needing to be explained. After all, especially with food, language is often without need of translation.

They sport themselves a rather decent wine list which seems to be the norm in this section of town. The service is quite good and they do not seem to be in any rush to make you leave. Both times we ate here we had to ask for the bill to come and still it took some time. And truth be told, I like that in a place. Nothing worse than paying for a meal out and being rushed right out because you’re not eating or drinking enough.

The first time she ordered the Gnocchi with Veal and I was to have the Lasagna. I found out after we ate that the lasagna is one of their signature dishes. I can completely understand why. It was very good and just what I needed after a very long and hard day that had started on the beach in 95 degree weather and was ending back in this wonderful neighborhood with temps in the mid 50s. I didn’t even mind that their lasagna has meat in it. I normally do not like it in mine, but theirs is quite good and as I said, just what I needed. We also had a salad to share.

The second time we were here we thought we’d get her the gnocchi again and were surprised to find that the menu had changed. I don’t know if they could have or would have made it anyway as she decided on the Risotto, which much to her surprise she enjoyed very much and has already recreated in the first couple days home in New York. This time I had the Tagliatelle. I however did not expect what I got, based on an improperly named dish at a different restaurant. But hey, surprises are not a bad thing. I enjoyed it very much. We once again decided to skip their desert and go to Yellow around the corner before heading back home.

  • "Kaos" is a really fun place. When you walk in, the staff are dressed up in characters and embarass you like crazy... they seat you with a very loud walk in. After the meal has been served, a show is performed on the stage. I wouldnt recommend it if you have young kids, however its great for Hen's and Buck night. Its a great place to go for a laugh.

The meal is set.. The food was not the greatest I have had but it was a soup followed by a meat dish. You are so much into the show that you don't really care how bad the food tastes.

  • PJ O’Brien’s is one of the places I would hang out when I was here in 2005. My latest visit had us stop in here for a pub dinner. A nice multi level bar in the famous Grace Hotel they also serve a decent menu.

For dinner this day we both went simply with the burger. For about $15 each they offer up a decent burger easily paired with a schooner of your favorite beer.

This is also a place to watch sports from around the world all day long.

  • My favorite restaurant in Sydney. That should say it all. But I will go on.

Our first visit here was just for dessert take-away. We came into the shop and were amazed and awed by the large display of desserts. The pic above only shows one side of the display. After some time to decide we settled on our picks. I was to have the rhubarb pie and Liz chose the chocolate truffle cookie.

After these amazing treats we decided we had to eat a meal here. And that was to come a couple days later when we stopped in for her birthday lunch. We were given a corner table with a good view of the small dining area for our semi-late lunch. WOW. What a great lunch we had. After a quick Cascade beer our food shows up. She had what I consider the single best meal in all of Sydney. The spinach gnocchi was absolutely amazing. So much so she’d have it again for our last dinner on Saturday night. I had decided I needed a filling comfort meal and ordered the fried fish and chips. This was just perfect. Tasty and filling I came away praising it well. And of course we had to take some more tasty desserts with us. She chose the cheesecake and I got the $15 tub of Tiramisu. Admittedly I let it go for a couple mornings before I ate mine but she ate up and loved hers.

We then also chose this as our last meal in Sydney this trip. We walked in at about 6pm and were surprised to be asked if we had a reservation and then that it might be a problem. In the end it wasn’t and we got our table.

She went ahead and ordered as I mentioned the spinach gnocchi again. I decided this time to go with the fusilli with chili prawns. Once again I was completely thrilled with my meal and hers was just as she expected. We both chose to not drink anything but sparkling water this time. Then on our way out we got dessert again. I once again had the rhubarb pie and she had the caramel crème puff. Wow once again.

Throw in the stop for just dessert the day between the two meals here for an apricot tart for her and you can see that it is my favorite restaurant.

    Another "quickie tip" from pchamlis......

If you've been hanging around Mrs. MacQuarie's Chair taking pictures, and find yourself hungry, you migh wonder to yourself...

"I wonder if the food is OK over at that little hot dog stand?"

Well, the short version of the answer is YES. The food is tasty takeaway, and there's a pretty decent little variety. There are meat pies (as everywhere...although I'd go somewhere like Harry's Cafe de Wheels to try Aussie pies...), hamburgers, hot dogs, various "cut sandwichs" and all sorts of liquid refreshments. I THINK they had beer, too, but I didn't get any on my visit.

Anyway, it's just a little stand, nothing special. But if you're hungry and don't want to walk back to Cowper Wharf or over to the Opera House/Circular Quay areas, you can put the feedbag on here. : )

They had good hot dogs, a variety of crisps (potato chips to we Americans) and some other sandwich offerings.

BTW, I also was introduced to another Aussie candy favorite after finishing my hot dog....

Tim Tams. They're a little bit like a cross between the American candy bars Kit-Kats and Twix. Tasty little chocolate cookie-covered goody. Give 'em a whirl. They're nowhere near as good as a Cherry Ripe Bar, but they'll do in a pinch. ; )

  • Harry’s is a Sydney institution. I have seen others around the city but this trip I found myself passing the original nearly every day on the bus back to the hotel. So we stopped and got off to get a pie for a snack.

You will always find that there is a crowd here. We even had people waiting behind us while I decided quickly what I was going to eat. The do quite a bit of business and are worth the visit at least once. They’re an attraction for a reason.

I had the curry pie and she the hot dog. I was pretty impressed in the curry pie and do wish I had bothered to stop and get another during the week but with so many better food options just up the stairs in Potts Point we never did.

  • Now this is a place I honestly can’t believe I hadn’t been to before. A simple little pastry shop with a shared court yard in the back that is actually quite spacious you will find yourself enjoying life quite nicely when you visit.

As you enter this narrow little shop you see the display case and attendants on the left. And this is where you’re fun begins. They have such a great variety of extremely tasty treats I am sure you’ll find something you’ll love.

We ate here three time during our week on this last visit in 2007. The first time we had the Crème Brulee and a large Meringue. Both of these were quite good and got us going with a quick sugar ingestion.

In the coming days we stopped back here several times looking for the Crème Brulee but were turned away as they didn’t have any at that time.

Finally were in luck when on our last day before meeting up with friends we stopped by here around 11am. Crème Brulee and this wonderful Raspberry Sponge Cake creation that I must admit I only chose because it was in the picture of AussieDoug’s tip on this place. And well, since I had a second one later in the afternoon upon our second visit of the day here, it was well worth the choice.

It is said that the Chinese cuisine, particularly the Yum Cha/Dim Sum are up with the best in the world - ie next to Hong Kong and Guangzhou, that is Southern China where the reputation for fine food has been renowned.

WE ended up at The Marigold which was always one of the well regarded before my 7 years away in Europe and the range and quality of the Dim Sum served to us was still excellent and absolutely enjoyed!
Its a little more up in price since Ive been away but for the $20 each person our 10 or so selections plus rice and tea came to - about £8 per person - thats great value for money!

Prawn dumplings, vegetable dumplings, any dumplings!, bok choy with oyster sauce, and the coconut jelly was still wow! Weve not usually had barbecued pork when having Yum Cha but it was offered and it was a delicious accompaniment as was the Jasmine Tea.
