Delicious Asian food, mostly Malaysian. Satay, salt & pepper squid, mild curries, laksa, flat noodles, oh and the duck is divine! Everything is so tasty. Great place for groups (works out to be especially good deal for groups), but even not a bad choice for dinner dates. There is usually a queue (a good sign to prove it's popularity), but they usually take your mobile number and you can go have a drink in one of the many nearby bars. Max wait time is 40mins, but usually only about 15-20min wait. Great in Summer, you can sit outside. Good ambience, nice lighting, love the huge buddah at the entrance. You are welcome to light some incense by the Buddah and make a little prayer. Amazing website too, check it out!!
Probably the duck... but then, it was all pretty damn good! | | | | Darling Harbour / Cockle Bay Restaurants: Fabulous Nonya cuisine and Laksa | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Malaya is one of my favourite restaurants to visit with a big group of friends. It is fabulous value for money and the atmosphere of the restaurant is clean, modern, well managed and fun. If there are 3 or more of you dining, you have the option to try any of the 3 banquets on offer, for between US$18-22 per head. All of these are EXCELLENT value. Bookings are definitely recommended a few days beforehand if you wish to come here on a Fri or Sat night, as this place is popular with groups and is often booked out on these days. On week days it is less busy so I would recommend coming here on a week day if you are in a smaller group as it is less hectic. TIP: Ask for a table outside to snare a lovely view over Darling Harbour over the water. Entrees $6.50-$18; mains $14-$23; desserts $5.50-$8 AUD
Katupan Prawns, Seafood Laksa (the laksa is meant to be the one of the best you can get in Sydney), any of the Malaya banquets offer excellent value for money.
