AMP Building / Centre Point: AMP Building and centre point tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney most visible icon with a height of 304 m is the Sydney Tower, formerly known as Centrepoint Tower or AMP Tower that serves as both a communications tower and as a tourist facility. The Centrepoint Tower project began in late 1970 and it started with the construction of a sixteen level reinforced concrete building. The building was completed in 1974 that accommodated shops and offices. The construction of the tower itself started with the prefabrication of the 46-barrel units that formed the shaft. The diameter of the units is 6.7 m and the weight is 27 tonnes. The turret is an eight-level welded steel frame structure that was manufactured at the base of the shaft. As the shaft progressed the turret was raised up. The bottom part of the spire was erected in as the shaft progresses. The second part of the spire was erected when the tower structure was completed. The spire is made of 56 cables those weights 7 tonnes each. Total weight of the tower is 40,000 tonnes.

The AMP Tower is located at 100 Market Street, is accessible from the Pitt Street Mall and stands upon Centrepoint (to which some people refer the tower to) which is an office building and shopping ventre. When we entered the shopping centre we spotted lots of security staff and once we bought a ticket for the AMP Tower we were guided by them towards the elevator and contantly watched by them. It felt a bit weird! The ascent of the tower is achieved by 3 high speed double deck elevators which complete the trip in around 40 seconds. We must admid that the feeling in our tummy was quite weird, but it was a fascinating experience. At the observation deck there are several binoculars so you're able to observe Sydney completely. We were lucky; the weather was beautiful and the sky was very clear. We could see all the places we visited till then, like The Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Opera House and the Royal Botanic Garden. Even the port of Manly (where we took the ferry to Circular Quay) and the airport were visible. We also spotted some places we still had to visit, like the Sydney Aquarium and the beach of Dee Why. This top of the tower even contains 2 rotating restaurants and a coffee shop.

When we were at the observation deck we read about some interesting fact about the AMP Tower. Not completed untill 1981, some of the interesting facts behind the construction of the AMP Tower include a 35,000 gallon water tank at the top of the tower that acts as a stabiliser on windy days. There are 56 cables that weigh 7 tons each that hold the tower in place. The tip of the AMP Tower is 320 meters above sea level and it took a lenghty 7 year contrauction period to complete it. But anyway, the bservation deck is about 250 meters above ground level. It is a fully-enclosed viewing platform and features a small gift shop and a readout displaying data on the conditions of the tower, like wind speed, direction and sway amplitude. We also noted the Skywalk platform, it's about 260 meters above sea level and is an open-air viewing platform. We were not allowed to go there as it is aonly accessible as part of planned and booked tours.

Check out the views and have a great meal at the same time. This tower's observation deck is the highest in the southern hemisphere, and at 1000 feet, the tower is by far Sydney's tallest structure. Standing at 305 metres (1001ft) high, in the middle of the city it offers views on a clear day as far as Wollongong in the south and the bluemountains in the west,as well as the north and central coasts. Three great tours are offered and include 15-, 30-, and 45-minute options (the half-hour version shows a movie and has moving seats). If you get hungry there are two revolving restaurants available as well.

AMP Building / Centre Point: For a spectacular view, take...
  • Tip Rating:
  • For a spectacular view, take the lift to the top of the Sydney Tower (otherwise known as the AMP Tower). It's about 20 bucks, but well worth doing at least once - you can see a long, long way! As a bonus, there's a handy shopping mall (Centrepoint) and food court at the bottom!

  • I'm afraid of heights os I definitely wasn't going up to see the view. If you aren't afraid by all means go and see what I hear is a rather impressive view.

  • The construction of Sydney Tower Centrepoint began in 1970 with the first 52 shops opening in 1972. The office component was completed in 1974 and the final stage of the complex: The Sydney Tower was opened to the public in 1981. Sydney Tower is the highest point (250 m) above the city, with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the beautiful city. You'll be amazed by the fantastic views! This is a must in Sydney. ------------------------- Besides the spectacular view, the Sydney Tower also offers the OzTrek and the Sydney Skywalk. The OzTrek is a ride with 180-degree cinema screens, special effects with surround sound and real-motion seating! I was not impressed by the OzTrek, but if you are travelling with kids this could be fun? You can also try the Sydney Skywalk, which is an adventure walk outside the golden turret of Sydney Tower. I didn't go, so I can't comment.

  • Visit the AMP tower for great views of the city by day, and then go back at night for dinner in the revolving restaurant. The food is quite good, and is certainly a novelty.
