Beaches: Manly by ferry
  • Tip Rating:
  • Manly should be on your must see list. You can get there by ferry/hydrofoil from Sydney Harbour. Manly has an underwater world for the kids and a lovely beach. It also has lots of quaint shops in the corso and the atmosphere there is warm and friendly. We loved buying an ice cream at the shop at the end of the corso just before the beach and taking it over the road to sit and eat and watch the waves. My favourite flavours are bubblegum (kakky green colour haha) and licourice (totally black yum yum ). The kababs at Manly are yummy too. Do not miss going to Manly by ferry/hydrofoil.

  • The beaches of Sydney are world class. Why not make a day of hanging out at one of the many beaches located here in Sydney? I loved Manly Beach. We spent a nice leisurely day here. The water was a bit rough and the weather a bit chilly, but that didn't stop many of the beachgoers from enjoying a beautiful day.

    Beaches: Any beach is great
  • Tip Rating:
  • I haven't been to all the beaches - that would be tough since there are heaps of them - but I can tell you about a few good ones. Bondi Beach (pronounced bone-dye): This is one of the most famous beaches. It is amazingly popular with both Aussies and tourists. It's really big, clean, and has lots of services (bathrooms, showers, first aid stations). There is also a huge boardwalk area, so you can spend a whole day in the area. There are restaurants, shops, arcades, etc. If you get off the immediate beach area (go inland even 2-3 blocks), you will find more great restaurants and shops that are much less touristy and less expensive. It's a wonderful suburb to wander in. There's also Bondi, a separate suburb. In Bondi Beach, someplace close to the beach itself, is a place called Death By Chocolate - if you like chocolate, it's worth finding! I don't remember exactly where it is, but I'm sure people can stear you in the right direction. Bronte (pronounced like the authors): So pretty! Smaller than Bondi, and a better picnicy sort of area. Clean beach, lots of grassy areas. Not touristy like Bondi. Manly: Very similar to Bondi in that it's touristy and there is a lot to do. Great place for a half-full day if you want to combine swimming/tanning with other things without wasting travel time. The big differences: there is a nice (but expensive) aquarium there, and there are also a few amusement park rides where the ferry comes in. You can also combine a ferry ride over to Manly -- do a lot of tourist things at once!

  • Directions: There are 20+ beaches in the area. The beaches above and most others are on public transportation routes, usually buses. They can take up to 50 minutes from the city center. Manly is accessible by ferry. I would recommend taking the ferry.

The Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach Coastal Walk is spectacular, with dramatic cliff tops to small, intimate beaches. This walk is a great, invigorating experience. The walk is approx 2.5kms one way, medium grade and with some steps. Picnic areas and most beaches have BBQs, kiosks and toilets. If you just want to walk one way (doesn't sound far, but is a little more adventurous than it sounds) you can catch the 378 bus back to Bondi Junction.

    Beaches: Bondi Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bondi Beach is very popular ~ the restaurants and cafes are a bit on the expensive side. The real reason to visit, however, is to enjoy the stretch of golden sand ~ whether you surf, swim, walk or just watch the activity. Our visit was in July, so there weren't many surfers still braving the weather.

    Beaches: Bondi Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • The most popular beach in Sydney has to be Bondi. It is also one of the most beautiful. Doesn't it look stunning on the picture. Yes when I took the shot it was very very busy since it was Christmas, but it is just as busy on a sunny and hot weekend day, so come early for a good spot. Bondi has big waves usually, so hours of fun guarenteed if you want to surf or swim!! Sometimes there are rips though, so make sure you stay between the flags where the life guards can see you! Also don't go in too far or too long without taking a rest. I had to take someone to less deep water since he was exhausted. Beside being a wonderful beach for lots of activities, Bondi is also the start or finish of the Bondi to Coogee scenic walk. This is a walk of a couple of hours that will take you to some other beaches like Bronte and Tamarama. These beaches aren't as busy and well worth checking out.

    Beaches: Pittwater and Palm Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Breath-takingly beautiful and close to Sydney. Take a look at the picture, that should convince you! This is also where they film 'Home and Away' for any Pommie fans. There is a Youth Hostel at Church Point called 'Pittwater Youth Hostel'. Fantastic for a night away from town and under $25 each. The Hostel has good walking tracks and canoes you can use to explore Pittwater

    Beaches: Bondi Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Certainly not one of Sydney's most beautiful beaches, but being one of the most famous in the world it should rate a visit. The beach is approximately a kilometre in length and is patrolled by lifesavers who ensure that swimmers stay between the red & yellow flags - very important that travellers do this as many rescues are necessary every year due to lack of experience swimming at surf beaches. During the summer months Bondi Beach can be very crowded, but the water is clean and the sand is also cleaned every day. Bondi is a great place for people watching and there are some good cafes and restaurants along the beachfront. There are also many other activities all year round at Bondi Beach, many of them are centered around the Pavilion. Activities range from surfing competitions and kite flying to festivals, markets & galleries. From 17 December 2004, Bondi Beach and all other beaches in the Waverley Council precinct were deemed "Non Smoking" zones. Hurrah!!

Beaches: Bondi Beach: Australian Beach Culture
  • Tip Rating:
  • To fully understand the attraction of Sydney you have to go to the BEACH. Bondi is the most famous one, for sure not the most scenic in Sydney. But still it is a very good place to go and enjoy the sun, surf and sea. And you can easily continue on a rewarding walk along the coast to get to Tarramarra, Bronte, Clovelly or Coogee Beach south of Bondi.

    Beaches: Manly Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Manly is one of my favourite places in Sydney. To get there is an adventure in itself. You have to take the Manly ferry from the ferry terminal in Circular Quay. In 30-40 minutes you will arrive at Manly Wharf. There is a lovely hotel there with a terrace where you can sit outside with a cold drink to enjoy the view of the harbour. After the drink make your way through the shopping street to reach the beach. It's beautiful here trust me on this one. But I'm not the only one who thinks that, since Manly is one of the most popular beaches in the city. You can play some volleybal here with the locals or simply bake in the sun and ride the waves either on a surfboard or a bodyboard, or you can of course use your own body to surf the waves! After a day of lazing about you can make your way back again to the shopping street for some surf wear shopping and back to the hotel for a nice drink. Try and take a ferry back around sunset or simply watch the sunset from the terrace!!
