No visit to Sydney is complete without a trip to Australia's most famous patch of sand, Bondi Beach. Don't know what I was expecting but really its just a beach, sounds silly but i was prepared for something a bit more mystical. Saying that it is a good beach, a wide expanse of sand giving us loads of room on the day we visited, although i hear it gets packed on Holidays. Watching the numerous surfers catching a wave passes a good half hour, and talent spotting on the beach ;-) takes up the rest of the day while you sit back and catch some rays, remembering ofcourse to slap on the sun lotion. More than enough eateries on the streets directly off the beach, take a walk up to the ocean pool at the South End of Bondi, a good spot for taking pics. Visit the link i have included in this tip, i get pictures from Bondi beach in my email in box every morning because i subscribed to their free service

Tamarama Beach ---------------------- Very small beach, but cute. I quite like it! There isn't much there, but I suggest you go as it's very unique with cliffs on both sides and the beach is quite narrow. Type = Ocean beach, quiet. Getting There = Walk along the beautiful coastal walk from Bondi Beach or from the city centre, get the train to Bondi Junction Railway Station, then take the 381 bus and get out at Fletcher St (ask the driver for assistance), and it's a 300 metre walk to the beach. Bronte Beach ----------------- One of my favourites, if not my favourite beach in the Eastern Suburbs. Beautiful trees along the beach, as well as a nice park and a handful of cafes. I strongly suggest a visit to this beach. You will understand why. Type = Surf. Salt-water bathing pools available. Cafes. Getting There = Get a train to Bondi Junction Railway station and board the 378 bus. Bus route 222 can take you from Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach too. Alternatively, you may walk south from Bondi or Tamarama Beach along the fantastic coastal walk. Clovelly Beach ------------------- This is another cute little beach, but it feels more like a gigantic pool than a beach! It's marvellous for families as it's very safe. There is a cafe but other services are limited. If you like to go snorkelling, this is the best and safest place in the eastern suburbs. Many people snorkel here and there are some nice fish to view too. Type = Calm. Snorkelling. Cafe. Getting There = From Bondi Junction Railway Station, get the 360 bus and stop at Clovelly Rd near Keith St. Then walk easterly for 300 meters. Or, get the 339 bus from the city centre and this takes you directly to the beach. From Bondi or Tamarama or Bronte beaches, take the beautiful coastal walk south until you get to Clovelly.

Beaches: Lady Bay - nudist beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Part of the South Head - Sydney Harbour National Park tip, but worth highlighting separately if you are looking for a nudist beach while in Sydney. Bit of a schlepp to get to just to get all your togs off, but incorporated into Watsons Bay and South Head, worthwhile. Ferry to Watsons Bay from Circular Quays and then walk for approx 15 minutes.

Beaches: Northen Beaches = Palm Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Palm Beach is the very last beach north along Sydney's coastline. It has two types. The main part is the surf beach on the Pacific Ocean side (east), and the western side, Pittwater (Hawksberry River) side where there are no waves. The more ideal part for swimming is the eastern side though. There is also a lighthouse which you can walk up to for great views. The TV Show "Home and Away" is filmed at Palm Beach, known as "Summer Bay" on the show.

    Beaches: Shelly Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • A delightful, tiny, family orientated beach sandwiched between the southern tip of Manly and the North Head section of Sydney Harbour National Park. It's a very easy 15 minute sea front walk from Manly oceanside. Just hit the sea and keep walking south, sticking to the beach/sea. A path/quiet road takes you round the headland, small rocky inlets, exclusive sububurban homes, 2-3 excellent cafes/restaurants, a kiosk and the beach/grassed parkland and BBQ facilities. It's small, its popular with families because of the grass and shelter from the trees and the sea here, despite being oceanside, is very calm. Immediately behind the beach is the path leading up the cliffs and on the North Head National Park.

Coogee Beach ------------------- This is a nice beach during the day and at night, it sometimes can get a little noisy with many tourists and locals drinking heavily at the locals bars and pubs. There are plenty of nice restaurants and cafes too, so it can be enjoyed regardless of the weather. There is also a nice park that runs along the length of the beach. Type = Surf. Salt-water bathing pools available. Bars, cafes and restaurants. Getting There = From Bondi Beach, bus route 222 or you may walk along the coastal walk via Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly beaches. From the city centre, get the bus 370, 372 or 373. From Bondi Junction Station, get the 313 bus. Maroubra Beach --------------------- See the "Eastern Suburbs Beaches... Part V" tip for Maroubra Beach and photos!

    Beaches: Cruise to Manly
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another best way to explore the Habor without payin’ so much money on Captain Cook Cruise. Catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, the nearest surfers’ (and shoppers’) paradise. Intermediate-level surfers gather here on weekends (Manly is not a good place for first-time surfers), enjoy watchin’ hot girls in bikinis!! Enjoy the broad beach and less crowded comparing with Bondi, though the water is a bit too deep for amateur swimmers. The shopping street here is awesome especially if you’re into sport wares, swim gears and other outdoor clothing; Mambo, QuikSilver, Roxy, Rusty, Reef, you name it!!! The only bad thing around here is expensive eats, so if possible prepare your own lunch or buy something at the Circular Quay before getting to Manly.

    Beaches: Manly Beach (Ocean side)
  • Tip Rating:
  • As it is the closest ocean beach to the CBD and one of the easiest to get to, Manly is one of the more developed beaches and surburbs. Found on the north shore, its long been a favourite of locals as well as tourists, and has plenty of hotels for all tastes and budgets, as well as plenty of food and entertainment options. Its a bit too developed for my personal taste, but there are easy options to get away from the excess crowds. From the ferry, simply walk through the pedestrianised street - 5 minutes walk will get you to the ocean beach.

Beaches: Walk from South Bondi to Bronte beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walk from South Bondi to Bronte Beach This is a breathtaking coastal walk by the ocean, taking about 20-30 mins from South Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach. On the way you can see some lovely beachside homes and get a taste of the beachside lifestyle. At the end of the walk, stop and have lunch in one of the many cafes in Bronte overlooking the beach. So many people visiting Bondi Beach seem to miss this. Don't be one of them! (pic left: the pool at Bronte Beach)

    Beaches: Bondi Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • You MUST visit Bondi beach! Although a major tourist spot, you cannot beat it for people watching, and standing back to watch a mish-mash of cultures bathing in the ocean waves. In the summer, there are thousands of people at any time basking in the sun, a mixture of locals, tourists, families, the elderly ... you name it, its here. And for good reason too, it is a great atmosphere. Make sure you bring sunscreen and your hat, though! Don't fear in the colder months, Bondi is always a beautiful place to be. If you get tired of the beach, there are scores of cafes and restaurants 2 mins away on Campbell Parade. Try Gelbison, Liberty Lunch or Yulla. On Sunday and Wednesday nights, the Beach Road Hotel is your local hangout (on Beach Road - of course ... about 10 mins walk from the beach) (pic above left: Me, Tanya and Amanda New Years Day 2000, posing as tourists - click on the image and check out how packed it was!)
