  • This aquatic sporting event for lifeguards occurs during the summer months.
Lifeguards test their fitness prowess. How Aussie can you get!! Sydney people are just sports fanatics, they'll watch anything where people are running/swimming and competing.

  • Tip Rating:
  • As it is Australia, surfing is a big hit in sydney, with it's many beaches, there are still some uncrowded waves if you get away from the famous breaks.
Cronulla is a first class, dangerous wave

  • Go to Bondi Beach one of the most famous beaches in the world. It certainly is big and great for surfing and boogie boarding.
Great place to meet people, local aussies or fellow backpackers. Good shopping and restaurants along the beachfront and Bondi area.

    Beaches: Bronte Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Along the seafront of Sydney about 15 minutes drive from the town centre one finds Bronte Beach. Nicely siutated with white sands and great views over the cliffs near by. A lifeguard is on duty here.

  • Take a ride on the Ferry to Manly and spend the day there.
I find this trip very relaxing after the hustle and buslte of the city. You can take in the sights of Sydney most famous icons as well as spenidn time in Manly which is famous for it's beaches.

Beaches: Beaches are something you will...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beaches are something you will not be able to avoid in Australia. Near Sydney, the most famous one (and by far the most crowdy) is Bondi beach - don't go there to relax swimming or sunbathing; it's a place to meet people and mingle. The same goes for Manly, a party paradise just north of Sydney. Other places to go out to party and enjoy night life are Kings Cross and Darling Harbour (a bit more fancy). If you want to spend a quite day on the beach, try for example the Jibbon beach, south of Sydney bordering on the second oldest national park in the world - Royal National Park; some of the original Aboriginal engravings can be found nearby. Northern from Sydney, beaches around Collaroy are also very enjoyable and a true paradise for surfers; stay in the Sydney Beachouse YHA at the Collaroy beach and enjoy one of the most pleasant hostels there is - you will even be able to learn to play a digeridoo.

Beaches: Coastal Walk, Bondi - Coogee
  • Tip Rating:
  • The views are spectacular, and with the right weather it's a great way to spend half a day, or even a whole day if you choose to stop at each of the beautiful beaches along the way.

The walk also takes in Tamarama, Clovelly, Gordons Bay and Waverley Cemetery. Trust me on the last one.

    Beaches: People-watching at Bondi
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, for me it was not unique, as this was where I stayed, and most mornings involved a stroll down Campbell Parade. But Bondi does attract some of the posier people, and it's fun to watch the posers do their thing, whether that be ride up and down the strip on oversized Harleys or check their tanned reflections in the shop windows.

The picture above was taken at sunrise on Bondi (you can see the volleyball stadium in the distance). Even at this time people were up and about running or, and perhaps this is predictable, doing a spot of Tai Chi!
