Blue Mountains: The Blue Mountains are...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Blue Mountains are situated to west of sydney. It is a beautiful area packed with oil producing Eucalyptus trees. The area takes its name from the blue mist which can be seen above the mountains produced by rays of light shining through the oil droplets. The most famous view point in this area is Echo Point which looks out on to the Three Sisters - a great photo opportunity. There a literally hundreds of walks in the area - this a great opportunity to get away from the coach tours. There is also a fasinating aboriginal history behind the area and there are many legends explaining the landscape - for example the legend of the Three Sisters. The blue mountains is also home to the world's steepest railway but i don't think i don't think it's really worth wrestling with the coach tours to take the trip.

    Blue Mountains: Blue Mountains Drive
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everyone says go see the Blue Mountains, and it is a great place, but my advice is that if you do decide to go (and you should), do it by car. Hire one, borrow one or steal one (actually, ignore last comment!), but don't just take a prescribed tour by coach or whatever. Stick to the cliff drive and just experiment along the way - if you see a signpost to a town, venture off. If you see a brown sign, it's always worth a look. And last piece of advice - take your time. Only come back from the Blue Mountains when you've covered it all and at your own pace. Allow a few days and you'll really enjoy the break from city life.

  • Hike to the bottom . . . . . . and hope the train is working for the return trip up. If not, it's only 900 steps straight up!

Blue Mountains: Take a side-trip to Katoomba ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a side-trip to Katoomba to see the BLUE MOUNTAINS. You can choose to stay at one of the many lodges/ hotels here or you can turn it into a day trip. We took the Skyway (cable car) which brought us up close to view the famed Three Sisters here at the Blue Mountains.... It's basically 3 peaks jutting out from the mountain top. If you have already seen those lovely mountains in America's national parks, I doubt you'd be impressed by what you'd see here. However, if you've never seen the American national parks yet... yeah, you may find this absolutely thrilling...

Blue Mountains These gorgeous mountains are enshrouded in a blue mist. The mist comes from the Eucalyptus trees. They say that the air is very healing to breathe. The mountains seem to rise straight up vertically from the ground. They are a bit jagged and covered with trees. Kangaroos hop around, but there are not many koalas anymore. The frequent natural fires chased them out. The trees have special thick bark as a defense against the fires. Tropical birds flit about and squawk to one another.

  • Visit the BLUE MOUNTAINS at Katoomba. Called the Blue Mountains due its bluish tinge seen when the sun shines through the abundant eculaptyus vapor given off by the leaves. Katoomba is a tourist resort famous for the Three Sisters called Meenhi, Weemala, and Gunnedoo, an awesome rock formation on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Jamison Valley. The Katoomba Scenic Railway is located nearby on the site of abandoned coal mines. The Scenic Railway was built around 1878 for a coal mine in the Jamison Valley. . The Scenic Railway is the world's STEEPEST incline railway. It descends 415 metres at a maximum grade of 52 degrees.
