Darling Harbour: It's new, it's shiny, it's got... sheep?

  • Those British settlers sure do love their sheep! They're everywhere! Even one of the latest areas of Sydney to go through a Renaissance of sorts. Darling Harbour used to be a working docks area, with the usual drabness that goes with it. The city's elders, however, eventually realized the area's potential and applied a very startling, and probably expensive, facelift. The area was cleaned up, rebuilt, and made into one of the prettier parts of Sydney, complete with a new mall, endless cafes and shops, a new convention center, aquarium, IMAX theater, museums, gardens, a public marina, endless fountains, and some very beautiful landscaping.

Darling Harbour: Be sure to visit Chinatown.
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is distinctly oriental architecture, along with street lanterns and archways. Sydney's Chinatown has recently extended from the bounds of Dixon, Hay, and Sussex Streets to George Street in the east and Darling Harbor in the west. The Asian restaurants are open throughout the day, until 4:00am in some cases. Chinatown is an easy 15 minute walk from Central railway station. A light rail service operates from Central to Haymarket, just outside Chinatown. The nearest Sydney Explorer stop to Chinatown is stop number 17.

Sydney's sister city is Guangdong and this park was a gift (1980's). You can pick up a botanical map near the entrance ~ it details the varied plants and flowers that decorate the park. There are also several pavilions, a waterfall and a sleeping buddha. It's a lovely break. . .not to be missed.

  • The James Craig is a fairly important part of our family. So everyone was thrilled when I finally said I've been to see it. And I am planning to get out on a cruise on it on a future trip. This wonderful Barque first set said from England on April 6 1874 and made many runs around the world supplying to growing areas of New Zealand and Australia as well as Oregon and Chile.

    Darling Harbour: Sydney Aquarium
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Sydney Aquarium is amazing ~ I'm a huge fish (and animal) fan and this type of set-up is like catnip to me. You can see sharks, stingrays and vibrant fish in recreated environments ~ all from underwater viewing tunnels which are the next best thing to diving.

  • This is a complete great place to spend time with for at least one whole day. You can have your leisurely walk on its vast area, spend a quite moment at the Chinese Garden nearby, go shopping, dine&wine at ample bars and restaurants, visit specialized places like the Sydney Aquarium, IMAX Theater, Sydney's Convention and Exhibition centers, or simply sit in the park (especially the ones fronting the bay) and watch beautiful people around! I was lucky one night to be able to watch in amazement the International Boat Show showcasing only the best of man's best toy in the sea - Yachts!

  • Darling Harbour is fun. It was totally rebuilt about 15 years ago. It's very upscale and an interesting place to see, but I wouldn't make it a priority. If you enjoy shopping or are looking for a beautiful place for dinner, go - but expect to pay for it! There's also an IMAX theatre, a museum, and some other things to do, but again, they're pricy and cater to fairly specific tastes. Do it if you're into that stuff, but there are a lot more to do in Sydney that are specifically Aussie that you can't get other places -- Darling Harbour isn't one of them.

  • Address: West of the Harbour Bridge
  • Directions: There are buses that go there, the train goes right through (take the circular downtown loop), or you can walk from the CBD. It'll take you about 10 minutes, and it's well marked.

A haven of tranquillity and quiet contemplation from the hustle and bustle outside its walls, the gardens are a stone’s throw away from Chinatown and Darling Harbour. The Chinese Garden of Friendship was presented to Sydney by her Chinese sister city, Guangzhou in China. The gardens were developed on a site in Darling Harbour near Chinatown and complementing its rich heritage and culture. The gardens were officially opened in 1988 as part of Sydney's bicentennial celebrations and were named the ‘Garden of Friendship’ to symbolise the bond established between China and Australia. Being one of the few public traditional Chinese gardens outside China they offer a rare insight into Chinese heritage and culture. One of the interesting features of the gardens is that you cannot see the whole garden from any point within. This adds to the seclusion and peace of the experience. The garden has a number of other noteworthy features including the Dragon Wall symbolising the bond between New South Wales and Guangzhou, the Water Pavillion of Lotus Fragrance, the Twin Pavillion and The Tea House, with its fabulous balcony area offering views over the main parts of the garden. It offers traditional Chinese tea and other refreshments. The best way to enjoy the garden is to buy a combination entry with tea and cakes for only AUD$8, this way you can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the grounds before taking tea and enjoying a vista over the central pond of the garden. Enjoy!

  • Darling Harbour, across the water from the Cockle Bay complex is also an interesting place to visit. It is a bit touristy but if you are holidaying in Sydney, you will probably enjoy a visit here. Great for souvenir shopping. With Australia's leading maritime & powerhouse museums, an aquarium, the world's largest movie screen and a magnificent Chinese Garden, Darling Harbour attractions are sure to please!
