Completed in 1932, the construction of the bridge was and econimic feat as well as an engeneering triumph. The total lengt of the bridge is 1149 meters including the approach spans. It was not a cheap bridge to built. The total costs were 13.5 million Australian dollars and besides that the annual maintenance costs are 5 million Australian dollars. When we arrived in Sydney we were picked up at the airport by relatives. They lived on the other side of the harbour. They decided to drive over the Sydney Harbour Bridge instead by driving through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel which was build in the early nineties to relieve the traffic at the Bridge. From the Harbour Bridge we had a beautiful view at the Sydney skyline by night. Therefore our first impression of Sydney was :"Wow, this is a great city!" There have been bridge climbing trips for a few years now. They take a couple hours and provide all the equipment that you need and a guide. They are expensive. If you don't want to do this or can't afford it, you can climb a piling (I think the northwest one, but it's been awhile, so I can't swear to it) for a couple dollars. You get a beautiful view of the the bridge and the harbour area. You can walk across the bridge on a pedestrian walkway as well. There's plenty to do in that area if you're making a day of it - obviously there's the Quay and Darling Harbour, but on the northshore, there's also a small amusement park (how often can you ride a ferris wheel while overlooking such beautiful water -- see my tip on Luna Park), and even better, there's a big pool just next to the bridge. For a couple dollars, you can spend as much time as you want - and it's a nice alternative to the beaches on a hot day if you don't have the time to get out to one of them. Leave a Comment Directions: You can't miss it - it's that big coat-hanger thing spanning the water!

Yes, everyone has heard of the Sydney Harbour Bridgeclimb, yes it must be absolutely fantastic to do - but at AUD$165 + more for pictures, I just cannot bring myself around to spend THAT MUCH MONEY on it!!! Nope, until I win the lottery I will content myself on climbing the South Pylon of the bridge for a far more reasonable AUD$5... It affords fantastic views of the city, the harbour and the world famous icon - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but from a static point of view instead of being able to walk over the structure. There are 200 stairs to the Pylon Lookout, and it is 87 metres above mean sea level. On the way up there are 3 levels of the Landmark Exhibition, where you will discover about the history and construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the men who built it, including the vision of JJC Bradfield, the chief engineer. Why not walk across the bridge as well, and you will have accomplished most of what you would if you’d taken the bridge climb – then figure out what you’ll do with that $160 you’ve still got left in your pocket… ;-) Leave a Comment Address: South Pylon - Sydney Harbour BridgeDirections: Take the pedestrian pathway on the E side of the Bridge from the city side (use 'Bridge Stairs' in Cumberland Street). If you are coming from the N side use the steps by Milsons Point train station.

Apart from the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge is one of the most popular attractions in Sydney. You can go right up the top of it. This is a view from our ferry coming in from Parramatta. It's a lovely peaceful trip along the Parramatta river. Leave a Comment

If you're here over New Years, be sure to go to the harbour for the fireworks - it is a truly amazing experience! We were lucky to have met a fellow VTer a few months previously who got us into the private party of the Opera Bar with a grandstand view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge across Circular Quay for free. We were able to celebrate in style with almost a dozen friends and even the non firing of the 9 o'clock fireworks due to high winds didn't put a dampener on festivities as when midnight came the whole of Sydney Harbour Bridge erupted in a cacophany of sound and light! The show was truly amazing, perhaps only rivalled by Kuala Lumpur this year and the final message of the Dove of Peace was a very poignant thing in this time of uncertainty - let us hope the leaders of this world share its sentiment... If the thought of doing the Sydney Bridge Climb frightens you, or if you don't want to blow your budget by doing it, then the Pylon Lookout is the next best alternative for spectacular panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. For just 8.50 AUD (compared to 200 AUD+ for the Bridge Climb), you can climb the steps of the bridge's southeast pylon and admire the views fom the top. This is a great place to watch the boats coming in and out of the harbour, passing the famous Opera House. Just as spectacular is the view of the bridge from up close - you can watch the intrepid bridge climbers or look down at the traffic darting across the bridge below you. As well as the obvious attraction of the amazing views, the price also includes a few interesting exhibits inside the pylon. One room houses an exhibit with lots of photographs of the bridge at various times in its history, from the construction stage through to present day. These are accompanied by interesting text articles and facts about the bridge. You can find out how long the bridge is, how long it took to complete and how far it moves during strong winds! You can also read about how the construction of the bridge provided much needed employment during times of economic depression. Another room houses a small cinema screen which shows a documentary about the history of the bridge, while other areas of the pylon act as a small museum, with models of workers building the bridge for example. Great views over Sydney Harbour!! A cheap alternative to climbing the bridge. Very highly recommended!! The Harbour Bridge is another of the symbols of Sydney instantly recognized around the world. It connects the north and south sides of Sydney together with road, rail, and pedestrian access. In fact, walking across the bridge is a fun thing to do. I did it. There are even (expensive) bridge walk tours where you climb the structure itself with a guide! Not for those afraid of heights! With the Opera house this is the symbol of sydney. It is the main bridge that links the heart of the city with the northern neibourhoods. It is possible to reach its top but i didn't do it so it's better to catch info from someone else. Leave a Comment Directions: Close to the rocks and Circular quay...you can't miss it as you can see it from almost every place in the harbour

The Harbour Bridge is a steel bridge connecting Sydney with the North Shore. It is one of the most recognizable Sydney landmarks along with the Opera House. I like the arched steel of the bridge and thing it is quite beautiful. It's fun to watch people walk on top of the bridge (the Bridge Walk). I could never do that, I have a fear of heights and they don't let you bring your own camera. Leave a Comment

Climb the Sydney Harbour bridge I know a few people who did not climb the bridge when they werte in Sydney. They thought it was a 'tacky tourist thing'. If this was true then why do so many locals do it? Although the ticket is around $100 it is definatley worth it. THe view is breath-taking and you will never forget it.
