Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Botanical Gardens
Located on the coast between Woollomooloo harbour and the Opera House, the Botanical gardens are my favourite place in Sydney.

Its just a great big garden to walk around, to sit under a tree and have a nap, to read a big, or just to watch the world go by. Has some cracking views accross the harbour and Opera House.

You can do a tour of the gardens on an electrc train for $10, bu its more fun just to wander round the place yourself.

Look up in the trees and you can see hoardes of bats sleeping, waiting for the night.

Go and spend and afternoon chiling out here- guarentee that you will love it.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Nielsen Park
Nielson Park is a small park that is part of Sydney National Park. It is a secluded little park and has a nice walk from the entrance to the park through to Shark Beach. Shark beach has a shark net to keep sharks OUT - not that there are many sharks around Syd Harbour these days anyway. At Shark Beach there is a nice little cafe which has food, coffee and great picnic areas.

There is a short (30min) walk through the park which has spectacular views of the whole bay including the Harbour Bridge. This goes from the end of Bayview Hill Rd (off New South Head Rd) along the foreshore and ends at Shark Beach.... where you can relax for a coffee :)... you could of course do it the other way around and start at the entrance to Nielsen Park on Greycliffe Ave

Nielson Park would have to be one of my favourite spots in Sydney - I take visitors there whenever they come up. It is also handy to other interesting landmarks such as Vaulcluse house and Wentworth house. Its obvious that our early settlers knew where the best bits of Sydney were!

See the cockatoos! They fly free in the gardens, and if they believe there's a chance of getting food from you, they'll even land on your shoulder (or head, as happened to me). Don't worry, they're gentle. Even if birds aren't your thing, the Gardens are worth a walk-through. Very beautiful landscape, with small placards illustrating indigineous Australian plants and wildlife.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Botanical Gardens.
Sydney`s Botanical Gardens are only about a 5 minutes walk from the opera house, and has some lovely flowers and some freshwater ponds with loads of big Koi Carp in them watch out in the smaller ponds as i saw some giant Eels.
A great place to walk, you wouldn`t think that your in the middle a big city.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Beautiful Chinese Gardens
The Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour is really beautiful and were opened in 1988 for Australia's Bicentennial. The archetecture, structures and gardens are traditionally Chinese and you can hire traditional outfits for photographs which will really make you feel you are in China. There is a Bonsai garden near the entrance which i really loved and there is a large lake with lotus flowers blooming on the surface above many large goldfish. There is a lovely waterful and many lizards basking on the rocks.

They are open each day from 9.30am-5pm and cost $6 for adults and $3 for children/consession with a family tocket for $15.

There is a teahouse there to enjoy some traditional tea.
Well worth a visit- though it is not huge so unless you have picnic lunch to enjoy or spend time taking the photos or having tea, you can complete the circuit walk in 20mins.

The Royal Botanic Gardens cover 30 hectares in a spectacular setting on the shores of Sydney Harbour, with over eleven thousand plant groups from Australia and overseas, on display.
The Intercontinental Hotel overlooks these gardens as can be seen in the photo.

  • The Royal Botanic Gardens was just a short walk from my hotel and right near the Sydney Opera House. I personally found the place beguiling. From the trees hung large sleeping fruit bats with cute fox-like faces. Parakeets or lorikeets flew noisily around and screeching wild cockatoos were everywhere.

One of the best moments was when I saw a cockatoo sitting on a water fountain. It looked thirsty, so I approached cautiously. As I got nearer, it clawed gently at the handle for the water as if to say "Turn it for me please".

I was surprised to find that it didn't fly away as I approached and it didn't try to bite me when I turned the water on. As soon as the water started it began drinking, and soon I had several birds fly up to join him. It was really quite fun and scary. I know people say you shouldn't feed wild animals, but I hope there was no harm in giving it water!

  • The Royal Botanic Gardens were established in 1816, and feature plant life from the South Pacific.

We passed through the botanical gardens when we were walking from the area near Circular Quay to our hotel at Kings Cross. I don't think it's a shortcut, but it's a nice walk.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is a favourite picnic spot and jogging route for many people in Sydney.

    -------------------------

When you pass through the Royal Botanic Gardens, you must also take a look up in the trees…

There are many bats hanging in the trees. They are called flying foxes or fruit bats – fruit bats because they look like dark fruit hanging in the trees.

There are several species of bats, and the largest has a wingspan up to 1.8 meter and a weight around 1 kg.
