Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Hyde Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hyde Park contains a couple of fountains, some statuary and a sunken garden as well. It's a lovely place to drop in for a break from city sight-seeing. The Anzac Memorial is also found here ~ it's a striking Art Deco building facing a reflecting pool. You can apparently enter to visit a military museum, but we were enjoying the outdoors too much to bother.

A delightful and fairly easy circular route from Watsons Bay Ferry - approx 4kms. Turn left off the ferry and walk along the shoreline to the end and take a left and a fairly quick right. Follow the signs for Camp Cove Bay through the narrow lanes of this exclusive Sydney suburb. Camp Cove Bay is about 10 minutes from the ferry and is a tiny, protected little bay with a small public beach 9although you get the feeling that the owners of the homes that back on to it would prefer it to be less public!). Great views of the city to be had from here - especially at the little boat house at the far end of the beach. Pass the boat house along a narrow path which quickly leads to 19th fortifications (and an old canon still in situ) and on to a wooden path/steps that lead to Lady Bay and Sydney's officially designated nudist beach! You can linger a while here :) or head on to South Head itself and Hornby Lighthouse. Fantastic views to be had, including North Head, the corresponding northerly opening to Sydney Harbour. The lighthouse keeper's home has been renovated and stands proudly on the point. From the lighthouse simply retrace your steps.

The beautiful Banksia is just unique. The colour is like sunrise here (which can be brilliant), the foliage is no nonsense and the tree is hardy...........all admirable qualities. It stands out in the bush and I guess if I can liken a plant to a place, it reminds me of Sydney (although this photo was taken in Woolgoolga on the mid-north coast)

  • I didn’t come to the Botanical Gardens and Domain until my third trip to Sydney in 2006. Now this has become one of my favorite things to do, especially the walk around the water’s edge from Woolloomooloo to the opera house. This is really one of my favorite Sydney activities. And anyone who goes and stays in Potts Point at least once I think you’ll find yourself doing this. As you start out you walk along the boardwalk with Woolloomooloo pier on the right. Finally you head up some stairs and onto the path. This goes on past the Swimming club and around to the first corner near Mrs. Macquarie’s chair. Let me tell you, next time I come by here I’m bringing my picnic kit. What a place to kick it for a couple hours and watch the world and harbor traffic go by. From here you follow it back around the horseshoe all the way to the opera house. A nice pleasant walk, that affords for some fantastic shots.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Sydney's National Parks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney is surrounded by National Parks some of which are easily accessable by public transport. The closest ones are Sydney Harbour National Park, The Royal National Park south of the city Kuringai Chase National Park in the North. All have good examples of aboriginal rock carvings. Check the National Parks and wildlife website for detailed walking information. There is also a National Parks information centre in George St, the Rocks next door to the NSW travel Centre.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS
  • Tip Rating:
  • While in Sydney take time out to wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens. We were on our way to the Opera House (walking of course) when we realised we could detour off Macquarrie St and see something other than pavements and buildings. Pick up a free map at one of the entrances to be guided to the different areas of the gardens. We checked out the Tropical Centre. There was a display of carnivorous plants and orchids, for a fee.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is an oasis of 30 hectares in the heart of the city. On the shores of Sydney Harbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens occupy one of Sydney's most spectacular positions. Established in 1816, it is the oldest scientific institution in the country and is home to an outstanding collection of plants from Australia and overseas. Apart from regular walking tours, you can save your legs, if you are a busy tourist by using the trackless train around the gardens, which operates between the Botanic Gardens Cafe and the Queen Elizabeth II Gate near the Sydney Opera House. Daily (weather permitting) every 20 minutes. If you have time, have a picnic. Its great fun!

Everybody got a wake-up call at 7.00 on 3 July, but it was better than the 5.30 which Mr. Rath wanted. We took a nice hot breakfast at Bersen's restaurant. It was a real breakfast, rather than the continental ones I was used to in Europe. They served eggs of whatever style (you know I like mine fried well done), Canadian bacon, toast with butter and jelly, and tomato garnish. It was a cool 64° (18°C) but not cold. The winters in Sydney are much like those in Jacksonville or Savannah. We got on the bus to see the important sights around Sydney. First, we visited Mrs. McQuarie's Chair (she was the wife of the first English governor of Australia) from which there is a good view of Sydney. Maybe after my successful career in Congress, they will commemorate my easy chair that way! Second, we visited a neighbourhood called "The Rocks" that was a rough area during the colonial era. If they turn bad neighbourhoods into tourist traps, within 50-100 years, Anacostia in Washington and Oregon Hill in Richmond will be must-see stops for foreign tourists.

  • What a beautiful way to walk around from Potts Point to the Opera House. You could probably spent a week in the Gardens and not see all of its beauty. The gorgeous views of the water, the trees and plants, people picknicking, the city skyline above the trees....how wonderful a place!
