Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Hang out with a Koala
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is Featherdale Wildlife Park where you can have an interactive afternoon with some of Australia’s most famous known animals. You can pet a koala as they munch on their staple diet of eucalyptus trees or buy some feed for 75 cents (au) to lure a wombat or kangaroo for a nice Kodak moment. Meander your way through to the back where they have a whole area for reptiles, but I couldn’t quite make myself go through as the place looked too enclosed and, yes, I’m a scaredy cat when it comes to things that slithers. But a nice little surprise was a pen for a komodo dragon who I swear gave me the evil eye as I took a photograph.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: North Head - Sydney Harbour National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney Harbour National Park is essentially seven 'chunks' of prime real estate overlooking the harbour and/or the ocean, thus retaining a significant part of the natural landscape in the middle of the city. There's some stunning views to be had - of both the city skyline as well as unspoilt land/sea scapes. North Head is the northern 'opening' to the Harbour from the ocean and is easily reached from Manly. Personal favourite approach is along the coastal beach of Manly and Shelly Beach - just head 'up' when you reach Shelly. You can walk along the road or along tracks through the bush. It can be quite strenuous - tracks are there but its still pretty steep.

I recommend it to anyone looking for a nice walking trail with spectacular views. The trail runs along the cliffs, hits the South Head and some beaches with spectacular City views. Great, peaceful place with some bushland and truly astonishing surroundings. You can see it all and not even leave Sydney!

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Mrs Macquaire's Chair
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mrs Macquaire's Chair, provides one of the best vantage points in Sydney. The historic chair was carved out of a rock ledge for Governor Lachlan Macquarie's wife, Elizabeth, as she was known to visit the area and sit enjoying the panoramic views of the harbour. Mrs Macquarie's Point, directly east of the Opera House on the eastern edge of the Royal Botanic Gardens, provides excellent views west across the harbour to the Bridge and the Mountains in the far distance.

  • Directions: From Circular Quay, Mrs Macquarie's Chair is an easy 20 minute walk past the Opera House and along the foreshore walk in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

After picking us up from our hotel in Coogee Beach, aussiedoug drove us to Watsons Bay where we parked the car and started our explorations on foot. After enjoying a lovely lunch at Doyles we headed across the street to the entrance to Sydney Harbor National Park. From the entrance we hiked up to an amazing lookout point on the South Head of the Gap. The views were absolutely stunning.I snapped a few pictures posted here and the website below has an amazing shot taken from the same location but by a pro with a much better camera and lense than mine.

Park Street divides Hyde Park, to the south is the beautiful Anzac Memorial and to the north is the Sandringham Memorial Garden its an oasis of green in the middle of the city, a pleasant place to sit or stroll, or to picnic on a sunny day, admire the lovely Archibald Fountain which was built to commemorate the the ties between France and Australia in WWI there is even a giant chess set if you want to test your wits, the park is almost 200 years old

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: The Domain
  • Tip Rating:
  • The stretch of green in between the Botanic Gardens and Hyde Park is called the Domain. This is a fantastic place in the summer, not just to have a picnic, but also for all the festivals that are organised here. Think of Carols in the Domain, NYE, Sydney Festival, concerts and loads of other activities. The Art Gallery is also situated in the Domain.
