Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Royal Botanic Gardens and Mrs Macquaries Chair
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you only have a few days you really MUST walk around Sydney. My favourite city walk starts at Hyde Park in the centre of the city (Museum Train Station) and wanders through Hyde Park past St Marys Cathedral and the Archibald fountain, before heading down through the Domain, past the Art Gallery of NSW and into the Botanic Gardens. The Gardens, which hug the harbour, are home to many of my favourite city spots, including the Rose Garden, Mrs Macquaries Chair and the palm garden. Free guided tours operate daily, check the website for details. This walk lets you discover the harbour from a few different angles. If you have any energy left stroll over to the rocks and finish up under the Harbour Bridge. If not catch a ferry for a relaxing end to the day on the water.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Fall in Love With a Koala, Pat a Kangaroo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Symbio Wild Life Park This is a privately owned enterprise that is a farm environment that keeps and looks after injured or orphaned native animals that cannot be released back into the wild. They also carry out breeding programmes to increase the numbers of endangered species such as koalas and other small native animals ie rock wallabiesThis is great fun for adults and children alike. There are petting farm animals: ducks geese and rabbits, and then they are larger wallabies, kangaroos, and emus. You can get so up close and personal its a real treat for everyone, not just overseas visitors. You can buy feed for $1 a bag and then look as the animals fall in love with you. Some cannot be fed, but there are signs indicating which can and those that can't. Dont miss koala feeding time, as this is about the only time you will see one awake. Koalas sleep almost 23 hours out of 24 - Im so envious. The keeper will hold their koalas though, as excessivepetting and passing can stress the animals. This doesnt detract in anyway getting close and cuddly though with these adorable animals. At their kiosk get your free map and timetable, its easy to spend a whole day there. There is also a picnic area for lunch. Dont be surprised if a few fluffy faces join you at the table. [ but dont feed them anything but the food bought from the kiosk]

A must see for nature lovers and anyone who appreciates gardens as well as horticulture and wildlife. The Royal Botanical Gardens extend from mid Macquarie Street Sydney down to the Opera House. It features many interesting and themed areas, such as the "Palace Gardens" with notes and information on native and imported gardens. The RBG also is home to 'The Domain', a landscaped area of lawn that is utilised for open air theatre in summer time. [ Another Must Do] Simply beautiful. And its free. Its also nice to see the harbour start to emerge through the gardens [ if you make your way south to north], to emerge on the waterfront and the Opera House appear in front of you. Also home to the historic ' Mrs Macquaries Chair' : a sandstone chair carved for the wife of the once governor of Sydney. She missed her husband so much when he travelled away from the then colony, that she would spend hours at this point in the foreshore. So Governor Macquarie commissioned a chair to be built out of sandstone for her, and it is still there to this day.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Silly me in Chinese Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you visit the Gardens, there is also the opportunity to dress up like a Chinese doll and then you can stroll around and take pic's of yourself in the garden, or let the professional photographer take a pic of you. Sometimes we have to do silly things in order to have a good laugh few years later again and make light of this depressing world we live in.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Hyde Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • A walk through Hyde Park is relaxing and refreshing. I highly recommend it as you move about the city. Best thing is, its free! There are a few statues of local historical figures, and of course the ANZAC Memorial at the south end.

Parks / National Parks / Gardens: Beautiful gardens by the Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • You'll probably end up very near the Sydney Botanic Gardens, but like many visitors you could easily miss it! It's nestled amongst the surrounding green, manicured grass that line the harbour foreshore on the eastern side of the Opera House. Inside the gates of the Botanic Gardens, there is a plethora of Australian flora.. succulents, palms, fruit... and of course these attract many birds too. A great place to stroll through on a sunny Sydney day, amongst the rainforest-like trees. Especiallu good for young famalies, bird-watchers, plant enthusiasts and romantics!! A good place to escape the hustle & bustle of the city. Entry is free. They open 6.30am and close at sunset daily.

Visit the botanical gardens. The views over the harbour from there are very good and the vast assortment of flowers is unbelievable. The Royal Botanic garden is in a superb position in the city at the waters edge. It is about 75 acres of pathways through shrubbery, which was established in 1816. This makes it the oldest scientific institution in Australia. It is on the site of the first farm of the new colony and it houses an amazing collection of plants from both Australia and abroad. In the National Herbarium of New South Wales are exhibitions of the plant specimens collected by Joseph Banks when he was a member of Captain Cooks voyage along the east coast of Australia in 1770. The Domain is an open grassy space that was originally set aside for the personal use of the colony’s first governor. Joggers, footballers, people picnicking and sunbathers use it today. In January there are also outdoor concerts given in the Domain.
