The library is made up of two sections; the Mitchell and Dixon libraries. The Library buildings are a nice stone structure with a statue of Sir Richard Bourke Statue the former Governor NSW in the front. When we visited the library was undergoing some serious external renovations.

I was visiting for a school realated trip so research in the topic country was inevitable. I do love libraries and was especially impressed with the extent of this one. So bright and big! Obviously don't pass up on other excursions to come here, but if you happen by it, go ahead and pop your head in and maybe poke around a bit.

In this library one finds probably the most extensive collection of books relating to the history, genealogy and culture of Australia.
Various exhibitions also take place in the library. A shop and a café are part of the library.

It isn’t really a traditional library. More like a cultrural centre.
It houses the Australian Researcch Collecions, which document early life in Australia and hosts interesting temporary exhibitions in its galleries.
Note the magnificant floor mosaic, a copy of the old map showing Abel Tasmans two travels to Australia (1640).
Also visit the impressive readingroom in the Mitchell-wing.
