  • the Opera House is one of the most recognisable sights of Sydney. Built in 1973 this building was designed by Danish architect Joern Utzon and contains a theatre, concert hall, bars, restaurants and gift shops. You can enjoy the beautiful architecture by walking around on your own, or you can join a tour.

  • Sydney Opera House The opera house is a major landmark. You must, at a minimum, take pictures of it! You might even want to attend an operatic or theatrical event. We didn't see an opera but we did see an unorthodox production of King Lear in the playhouse. Besides the fact that it was off the wall and had some homoerotica thrown in, I don't remember any of it. Still, it was a fun thing to do at the time! After the play we watched the sun set and then had the good fortune to watch a major thunderstorm come rolling in over the harbour towards us. I had my camera on a tripod and took as many lightning shots as I could until the rain overcame us. Then we ducked into Bennelong's, a classy restaurant which is part of the SOH complex, to wait out the storm.

  • If you're either wanting to see an Opera (of course, with natural accustics - hence, no microphones or speakers) or take a stroll around the Opera House, well, it's one of those "must things to do" whilst in Sydney. There are beautiful views of the harbour as well.

    Sydney Opera House: Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Opera House was opened in 1973 and is the busiest performing arts centre in the world. In a competition set up to find a designer and with 233 entrants from all over the world a Danish architect (Jorn Utzon) was chosen to design the structure. In January 1957 and he predicted it would take 4 years to construct. Instead the Opera House wasn’t completed until 1973. It averages around 3,000 events each year with audiences totaling up to two million. Take a guided tour of the complex and have all the art and structure explained to you – its fascinating.

  • Visit the Sydney opera house, it is beautiful. Construction of the opera house began in 1958 and was completed, despite the architect resigning, in 1973. Today it is one of the worlds busiest performing arts centres. It is mainly used for opera and ballet. The largest hall, the concert hall, can seat 2,690. It is beautifully situated on the waters edge.
