Visit the Sydney opera house, it is beautiful. Construction of the opera house began in 1958 and was completed, despite the architect resigning, in 1973. Today it is one of the worlds busiest performing arts centres. It is mainly used for opera and ballet. The largest hall, the concert hall, can seat 2,690. It is beautifully situated on the waters edge. Leave a Comment Address: At Bennelong pointOther Contact: Tel: (02) 950 7111 Open mon to s |
SEE SOMETHING AT THE OPERA HOUSE I think that you don't really get to have a true appreciation for the opera house until you see something performed in it. It is a truly fantastic venue for the performing arts! A transient like myself can get tickets for otherwise sold out shows by lining up for DAY OF tickets a couple of hours in advance of the show. Double check when the lines form with the VERY helpful staff at the opera house. It's WELL worth waiting for! They are VERY casual in Australia, so don't worry about getting all dressed up for the show. I was surprised to find out that I could go in a singlet (tank too) and khakis...but the staff were very encouraging... Leave a Comment Directions: You can't miss it! It's the biggest landmark in Sydney! |
The Studio is the newest performance space at the Sydney Opera House and host to an eclectic collective of contemporary work. The Studio offers an experience across a range of performance, from comedy and music theatre, to cabaret and contemporary dance. The emphasis is on innovation and collaboration. And this goes for both artists and artforms. The Studio strives to support new and interesting work, challenging both audience and the more traditional ideas of performance. What's more you can see it in a relaxed space. The venue is flexible, the seating is unreserved and the intimacy of the space means an up close and personal experience. Leave a Comment |
Sydney Opera House Wanna know something funny? This was pretty much as close as I got to the Opera House. This picture was taken from the Sydney Bridge. I hear tell though, that they let you closer;P They give tours every morning, actually. Leave a Comment |
I didn't feel that a trip to sydney would be complete without a tour of the world famous opera house. I was shown around by a very enthusastic and friendly tour guide who explained the history of the building. It is quite possible that the judges regretted choosing the design they did as it caused a tremedious amount of cntroversy and was architecturally almost impossible to build. Yet despite the stresses and strains not to mention the cost of the project it is probably fair to say that sydney is a richer city for its world famous opera house. Leave a Comment |

The Sydney Opera House is the image that we all immediately know as SYDNEY! The tour is interesting -- you learn a lot about the struggles to get it built -- and, surprisingly, that the several theaters inside are structurely separate from the outside 'skin' -- and were, in fact, designed by someone other than the original architect. I will put up a travelogue of pictures from the tour later! But for now the classic 'shot' from near Inner Harbour. Leave a Comment |
A walk through Sydney is a great way to see the sights and hear the sounds of this wonderful city. You can check out my travelogue on the main page if you want to see my detailed walk through Sydney, or you could just go wherever you want to go. Start with lunch at Leni Park followed by a long walk along the waterfront to the Sydney Opera House, check it out on your way thru the Circular Quay, head down to the Rocks, get some good views of the Sydney Bridge before heading downtown. Check out all of the modern architecture on your way to the parliament house. After a tour, go opal shopping in one of the many jewelry stores downtown. Finish your evening off with dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood. Leave a Comment |
I'd definately suggest seeing the Opera House of course, go take a tour, I found it quite interesting. You will get the chance to tour the inside of the opera house, see the chambers in which performances are put on, possibly catch a practice run or show, as well as go out on the roof and balconies to see how the place was built. I'm pretty sure you can arrange the tours at the opera house tour office, it's in the circular quay. Leave a Comment |
