The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Argyle Cut
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Argyle Cut is a tunnel along Argyle Street which was chisled by hand out of the bedrock by convict labor. It took over 20 years to complete the work. When you walk through the tunnel you can notice the individual chisel marks in the stone. It gives you a real sense of the dynamics of the early society in Sydney. Unfortunately, the photo didn't come out... but anyway, here is a picture of the stairs leading down from Cumberland Street, which runs above the tunnel, to Argyle Street at the tunnel entrance.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Colonial Australia
  • Tip Rating:
  • To the left of Circular Quay there is an area known as 'The Rocks'. It is a glimpse of colonial Australia - as this area is historically important as the foundation of Sydney and Australia when she was young. It is only a glimpse because it is full of 'Australiana' type places - souvenir stores, etc. But the architecture, tree lined streets, Argyle Cut (a 'tunnel' under the road leading up to the Sydney Harbour Bridge) and the ambiance of the place is very nice and relaxed.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Circular Quay
  • Tip Rating:
  • The construction of Circular Quay was started around 1850... Using convict labour and sandstone from The Rocks. It was originally known as Semi-Circular Quay, and became the commercial hub of the growing town of Sydney. This is a great starting point for a day in the city. You will find many buskers here, entertaining the people... as well as many resturants, cafe's, and tourist shops. This is the main terminal for Ferries, which will take you to various parts of the Harbour.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the shadow of Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, site of the first landing in 1788 in what became known as Sydney Cove, is one of the city's main attractions. Sadly, much of the 18th and 19th century original was demolished to make way for the new city in the 1960s, but sense prevailed and what remained became protected and consequently converted into shops, restaurants and bars!! But there are some historic sites mixed in among the commercial outlets, cobbled streets and great views of the Bridge and Opera House.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks is one of the most-visited parts of Sydney and is the foundation place of Sydney so is of enormous historical signifiance. It is often described as "Sydney's outdoors museum". The Rocks has recently undergone an amazing metamorphosis, the old district being transformed into a vibrant pocket of cafes and restaurants and interesting tourist shops and stalls. This has been achieved without destroying the area's Old World charm and historic buildings. Most activities centre around walking, looking and eating. The Rocks is Sydney's oldest preserved colonial district so the main emphasis is on the historical importance of the area. The Sydney Visitor Centre, at 106 George Street, is a logical and excellent starting point. This centre has a wealth of information on points of interest around The Rocks and provides free information and literature, as well as having souvenirs and momentos that can be purchased.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: worth a walk around
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks is definitely an area that you should check out. This is one of the oldest areas in Sydney; the buildings are some of the oldest you'll find in the city and they are beautiful. Many areas of The Rocks have been renovated, and now it's a big shopping and restaurant area. There are a lot of touristy and artsy shops here. Prices, for the most part, are on the high side, but not as bad as you'd expect. There are some great bargains if you look around. About 1 block off the main road that runs along the water, there's the amazing take-away place that has Greek food - it has some of the best souvlaki and gyros that I've ever had. It's worth taking a walking tour of The Rocks if you are going to go. Stop into the tourist center (the big white building on the main street); they sell pamphlets so you can take a self-guided tour, and they also run tours led by volunteers/historians. I took the guided tour; it lasted about 1.5 hours and the cost was very reasonable. I recommend this! I learned so much about Sydney and Australian history and also got much more info about the buildings and the area. My guide was a woman who had just finished her MA in history. She was so informative and enthusiastic! On weekends and at festival times, there is usually free entertainment, with outdoor concerts and street theatre. Many of The Rocks' pubs offer live music - jazz, folk and pop. The Rocks Market operates every weekend, from 10am to 5pm each day, and until 6pm in summer months. Some 100 stalls are set up under a series of sail-like canopies, filling the lower end of George Street.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks was the first european settlement in Australia. It wasn't a very nice nice place and it hasn't been for a very long time. Development in the 70's turned everything for the better, and also into the historic precinct that it still is nowadays. It's wonderful to walk around here, especially in the weekend when it is at it's most lively, with live music and of course the Rocks Market. In the Rocks you will also find the Observatory and the start of the Harbour Bridge!

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The rocks - A great place to eat & sitesee!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Woops,..........wrong rocks haha. I had to mention it and this is the closest pic I could find of The Rocks..lol. The Rocks is a quaint spot within walking distance from the Harbour. It is very European looking with cute cobblestone streets and lots of gift shops, cafes and pubs. I love it there and I'm sure you will too.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Sydney, On the Rocks with a Twist

  • Yes, a twist. This is where it all started. The twisty, hillly little lanes leading up from and parallel to the shoreline of Sydney Cove across the water from the Opera House is the area of the first settlement that is now Sydney. Wander around a bit to see a statue called "First Impressions," which features the shapes of three types of settlers carved *into* sandstone slabs. Then sneak around behind a row of tourist shops through an archway between two of the shops to Founder's Park. Here you can see what is left of a cluster of homes that were demolished during the bubonic plague in 1900 (photo).
