  • Be sure to visit the Rocks---Sydney's oldest section. It was settled by the 750 convicts along with 400 settlers who all arrived on the ships of the First Fleet on January 26, 1788. The historic buildings in the Rocks have been recycled to house shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. There are many pubs.

The site of the first colonial settlement in Australia in 1788, when about 1400 men, women and children arrived after 250 days sailing in the First Fleet, a fleet of prison ships. Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct is a charming blend of the past and present. Wander through the maze of cobbled lanes and beautifully restored sandstone buildings, learn about Sydney’s history at a museum or gallery and discover some of the best contemporary shopping, sightseeing and dining the City has to offer. TIP: visit The Rocks on a Saturday or Sunday and you will be able to enjoy the "Rocks Market" - these innovative street markets are held just beneath the Harbour Bridge, in George Street. There are over 150 stalls offering gifts, antiques and homewares, as well as cafes, pubs and great entertainment.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks

  • The Rocks is a very picturesque area of the city. You can easily spend hours just walking around its old streets and explore its numerous old buildings, pubs, cafes, and shops. The waterfront is green, much like the rest of the area, and is lined by expensive hotels and condos. It also offers some great views of the harbour and the Opera House on the other side. Amazingly enough, up until only several decades ago The Rocks used to be home to drunks, whores, and lots of other unsavory characters; not to mention horrible living conditions for the other unlucky masses that couldn't afford better accomodations. Luckily, the area has been restored and is now one of the nicest & desirable parts of Sydney. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time (at least half a day) to properly lose yourself in the maze of its narrow streets, alleys, and staircases.

  • The Rocks is the name for the stretch of area around the Harbour Bridge. . .it's past incarnation was as the slums of the city ~ today, it's clean, bright and a great place to explore at leisure. For me, the highlights of the area were the Sydney Observatory, The Rocks Marketplace and the harboufront along Circular Quay West (some beautiful architecture).

  • This is the Historic District of Sydney. It was here, in the great harbor of New South Wales that history began in Australia. In the years following the American Revolutionary War, England looked for a new place to send its unwanted and its convicts. The region originally mapped by Capt. James Cook was perfect. Starting in the 1780s, shiploads of convicts sailed here. Eventually, many obtained their freedom. And it wasn't long before free men and women came here. It wasn't long before the area became a thriving colony. The Rocks maintains some of the original buildings erected in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. And there is a monument to the men and women, convict and free, who settled here and formed the basis for the nation that was eventually to be.

  • Simply walk around the Rocks area, which was the first part of Sydney to be settled. It's history is amazing, and you can see it all around you. It is worth going into the Information Centre, and getting a guided tour, or a brochure with which you can follow a set tour at your own pace. A great way of seeing some of the history of Sydney.

Circular Quay is a great place to sit on a bench and watch the world go by. I enjoyed people watching, there is so much activity in Circular Quay. I loved watching the boats, ferries, water taxis and cruise boats on their daily voyages. It's also a great place to admire the Opera House and the Rocks.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every weekend in the Rocks you will find a very nice, but busy and touristic market, the Rocks Market. It's great to browse through all the stuff for sale here. Most of it is Australiana, and though usually more expensive then in the rest of Australia you have everything here. So if you want to buy everything at one place before leaving the country this would be a good place to do so. And if not, it's nice to see what's on sale in the rest of the country and a good place to compare prices.
