The Rocks and Circular Quay: Step 8: The rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you follow the path you will eventually get to the rocks. Its a fairly historical place in the harbour and offers some great view of the bridge and Opera house as well as having some great private art gallerys, restaurants, pubs and bars.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Garrison Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Garrison Church was officially named the Holy Trinity Church in 1840. Due to the fact that it was the colony's first military church it was called the "Garrison Church".

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The district known as The Rocks, Sydney's first village, has a fascinating history as a colonial port area. Many of the restored old buildings retain their heritage status and now house interesting shops and galleries, quaint pubs and good restaurants. Take a walk along the backstreets and check out the Argyle Stores and nearby Playfair Street. The Rocks Markets, which take over a section of George Street, is a weekend market specialising in Australian homewares, antiques, collectables, gifts and arts and crafts.

The Rocks is the Old Town of Sydney. It is situated on the western side of Circular Quay. From a European perspective the Old Town is not so old and impressing. Yet it shows Australian history. The Rocks was the area of the first European settlement in 1788. Before 1820's it was actually full of convicts and prostitutes, but this has changed from slums to three-story houses. Since the 1970's it has developed into a tourist area, full of cobbled streets, ancient building, small shops and a lively nightlife. The Rocks Markets at the weekend are quite interesting as well.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Nurse Walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • I started my day walking from my hostel in Lee Street to the Opera House, mostly along George Street, with a small detour along Market Street to Pyrmont Bridge and Darling Harbour. I discovered Nurse Walk when I nearly reached Argyle Street. From George Street, I thought it's just an area of fine restaurants or shops but when I walked through this area, I simply liked it... especially the stone pavement. Shops are small but nice, full of art and culture. It's like another world, so different from the busy city.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: Where it all began........
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks. Australia's old quarter. The Rocks was home to Sydney's first dwellings. It was also home to Sydney's first slum. Now a beautifully restored area...lots of shops, restaurants and pubs. Great for a drink on a sunny afternoon. The Rocks Market is held every weekend. Lots of craft and jewellery items. Some tacky souvineers but also some nice ones... not exactly cheap but usually unique. There are also some great restaurants here including Sailors Thai, Bel Mondo, Rockpool, The Fish at the Rocks.. If you want to learn about the history of the area try one of the walking tours. Call in at the visitors centre for details.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The oldest area in Sydney has been done up and is now an artsy place with lots of pubs, food halls, galleries and apartments in the renovated buildings. It's a small part of town but worth an afternoon because there's something around every corner and the old buildings are quite nice!

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hisoric Rocks area is a joy to wander around. Settled first by convicts and troops in 1788, it is not a museum, but an area of 19th century heritage on the harbour.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: What a view! The Shangri-la Hotel.
  • Tip Rating:
  • About two blocks from the Rocks you will find the Shangri-la Hotel. On the 36th floor there is a bar with what may be one on the best views of Sydney Harbor. The drink menu is incredible! I had something called 'Toblerone' (like the candy). It was decadent! Kahlua, honey, and a mixture of both white and dark chocolate shavings. There was so much chocolate, I had to finish it with a spoon!

  • Directions: Walk up the hill behind the Rocks. There is one entrance on Harrington St. I can't remember the street name for the main entrance but it's one more block up the hill above Harrington.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks Walking Tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks Walking Tour is fun to do and you can get a free self guided tour sheet from the Rocks Visitors Centre at 104 George Street Open Monday to Friday: 8.30 to 5.30 Saturday to Sunday: 9.00 to 5.00 Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. The Rocks was named by working parties of convicts who were first landed from the First Fleet in January 1788 on the rocky sandstone peninsula forming the western side of what is now known as Circular Quay. The Rocks is made up of 23 hectares of land. From the early 1880’s the city developed as a seaport and the Quay was surrounded by cheap lodgings, grog shops and brothels. The increasing population meant that there was a housing shortage. By 1900 the area around Cumberland street and Cambridge Street was a slum and the first case of plague was registered. 103 people died of it. The government demolished buildings on the peninsula in an effort to clean up the area. The harbour, built in 1926-32 cut the area of the Rocks in two. A review in 1983 sorted out the problem of economical realities and real estate development of the area and the wish to preserve the historical and sentimental value of The Rocks.
