The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bunch of boutigue shops for retail therapy. A few minutes walk from Circular Quay. I'm not quite a shopping fan, so no detail on this section. : (

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit the area known as The Rocks. There are some lovely places to eat, it has some nice shops and the views over the harbour are fantastic. The Rocks and Circular Quay It was once known as Semi circular Quay and is often called the birthplace of Australia. It was here that the First Fleet landed with its freight of convicts, soldiers and officials in 1788 and the new british colony of New South Wales was founded. The Rocks area gives you a taste of Australia’s past. It was less than a hundred years ago that the inhabitants lived in rat invested slums and gangs ruled life there. The area now is a cleaned up and forms part of a colourful promenade from the lovely Opera House to the Harbour Bridge. The First Fleet erected makeshift buildings in the Rocks area and hard labour by the convicts was used to establish more permanent buildings in roughly hewn streets. In 1900 the rocks was overrun with disease. In fact the street known today as “Suez Canal” was then known as sewer’s canal. There is a market on George street every weekend where you can find some good craft items and jewellery. We bought a lovely shower curtain there with the map of the world on it and even today it brings back memories. Plan your next holiday under the shower!!!

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks, the site of Australia's first colonial settlement. With colonial architecture, modern restaurants, art galleries, unique shopping, and views of the magnificent Sydney Harbour, The Rocks is a must see for any visitor to Sydney. (You can pick up a free booklet, called The Rocks Self-Guided Tour, from The Rocks Visitors Centre at 106 George Street. This excellent publication maps out the walk and provides historical notes on each building along the way.)

  • Go for a walk around the old area of Sydney, called The Rocks. Old buildings and old streets with narrow pathways, hidden stairwells. You get the picture. This shot of THE bridge was taken from the Rocks.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks a hundred years ago was a rat infested slum and gangs were running riot dominating the inhabitants. Today, The Rocks is wonderfully restored and forms part of the colorful promenade from the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the famous Opera House. Old warehouses now house art galleries and interesting shops and there are an abundance of pubs, restaurants and cafes all lying in the shadow of the harbour bridge. Exploring this area and learning about its history is fun.

  • The Rocks is an area in Downtown Sydney that was built many years ago from local sand stone. Many of the buildings are made of this stone, hence its name 'The Rocks'. Great Shopping area and awesome restaurants.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rocks is an interesting area where one can see examples of early Australian buildings. It's very close to Circular Quay and the Museum of Contemporary Art. I believe the oldest British settlement in Australia is the Rocks, though the first landing was in Botany Bay (where the airport borders) and the oldest building is in Parramatta.

  • Tip Rating:
  • On weekends and at festival times, there is usually free entertainment, with outdoor concerts and street theatre. Many of The Rocks' pubs offer live music - jazz, folk and pop. The Rocks Market operates every weekend, from 10am to 5pm each day, and until 6pm in summer months. Some 100 stalls are set up under a series of sail-like canopies, filling the lower end of George Street . The stalls are filled with a wide range of Australian gift ideas, homewares and collectibles.
