It was one of my most memorable days in my life. The Sydney Bridge Climb is a tad bit touristy--but it's definitely fun if you're going to do it with friends who are doing it the first time. Although, cameras aren't allowed--they've got official photographers there who'll take your pic. I loved sharing this experience with my European buddies as we stretched some of each others' fears of heights and what not. It was like a team-building session of some sort;) Leave a Comment |

One of the first places I visited when I came to Sydney was the famous ‘The Rocks’ area. The Rocks, near the modern harbor area, is the site of Australia's first European settlement and was the birthplace of modern day Sydney. It is here that you will find the colonial and federation style buildings of an earlier age. Surrounded by the glass towers of the modern central business district, the Rocks provides a pleasant escape and interlude from the hustle and bustle that is so common in cities today. I took some time and entered and visited some of the little shops along the main street - George Street. Everyone was pleasant and friendly and I enjoyed myself immensely. But, of course, I love history and I had been reading about this areas’ seedy past. In colonial times this was the place that the British sent their most unsavory residents with the direct result that the Rocks area soon gained a reputation for coarse behavior and treachery in all its guises. Beginning in 1900, a long overdue clean up and renovation of the area began when the Rocks was hit by an outbreak of bubonic plague. Then additional renovations took place when work on the Sydney Harbor Bridge began some years later. But now the Rocks is one of the city's principle tourist attractions. The area that has retained a good deal of its former charm and developments over the last few years have made it's winding narrow streets a friendly and lively place to spend time. Also in this area is the oldest house in Sydney - Cadman's Cottage at 110 George Street. Now home to the National Parks & Wildlife Service Information Center, it dates back to 1816. This Georgian building was originally home to a pardoned convict, John Cadman, when he lived in it from 1827 to 1845. Although it now sits over 150 feet (50 m) from the water’s edge, back in John Cadman’s day it stood directly on the shore. I also found this to be the ideal spot from which to launch a walking tour of the Circular Quay, its promenade and the Opera House. Strolling around the Rocks area is a very pleasant experience. There are craft stalls, with markets on certain days of the week, aswell as plenty of bars and restaurants. All of this is in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge and also affords nice views across Circular Quay to the Opera House.. Leave a Comment |

The Rocks and Circular Quay is a touristy thing to do...but it's a must see. It's where the Opera House sits...and is a great place to soak in the environment. There are always plenty of people and things to do. |
The Rocks are the historical part of Sydney, I mean, the most significant historical part of Sydney maybe? Well, the Rocks is a very nice part of town that is full of cobbled streets, colonial buildings, and tourists. It is also home to the famous weekend market, the Sydney Observatory, and numerous craft shops and art galleries. Leave a Comment |
