Parramatta Town Hall (0608080602)
Parramatta Town Hall in Parramatta, NSW, Australia - a very short 2 minute walk from Parramatta train station. The nearest road is the corner of Macquarie Street and Church Street. A further 2 minute walk west along Macquarie Street is Parramatta RSL (Venue for the Parramatta Chess Club and 2008 Australian Championships). The Town Hall is opposite St John's Cathedral (www.stjohnscathedral.org.au), one of Australia's oldest churches built in 1802. Parramatta Town Hall is a historic building built in 1880.
The Sydney Town Hall is situated in the heart of Sydney just opposite the Queen Victoria Building and alongside St Andrew's Cathedral.
This building is made of sandstone and is a very popular meeting place. There is a Town Hall subway station just below it.
We get to pass by the Town Hall which is in the centre of the town almost everyday.
You could see this bronze arch sculpture just outside the Town Hall.
The Town Hall is beautifully lighted up at night. It has a totally different feel when you look at this building in the night time.
Town Hall was built in the 1880s and has a Victorian style building. This is the only non-religious building from the era to retain its original interior deco and its operations.
Possibly most rewarding for architecture buffs though you will be hard-pressed to ignore Town Hall's presence. I made a stop here partly to meet up with a friend, and partly to take in the architectural details. (Plus, it was raining outside)
extracted from the website below:
..."For more than a century it has been the city’s major public and civic building, its clock a popular landmark and the marble steps leading up to the entrance one of Sydney’s favourite meeting places.
The Town Hall is the seat of the city's government and the venue for meetings of the City of Sydney Council.
Built in the grand Victorian manner from local sandstone, the building has been beautifully restored to its original form.
One of the finest examples of High Victorian architecture and decoration in Australia, it features a magnificent wood-lined concert hall, an 8000 pipe grand organ and exquisitely crafted stained glass windows.
The Sydney Town Hall is an impressive centre for civic and cultural events and its state of the art facilities make it one of Sydney’s most exciting venues"...
Home of the Sydney City Council & also a familiar landmark in the city. It was built between 1869-89. It has a refurbished art-deco auditorium frequently used for concerts and other cultural performances and events.
One thing that I learn... the Town Hall has the nick name of 'the wedding cake building' due to its high Victorian architecural style and decorative excesses.
For more than a century it has been the city’s major public and civic building, its clock a popular landmark and the marble steps leading up to the entrance, one of Sydney’s favourite meeting places.

Nothing minimalist about this building, its Victorian splendour is totally OTT
It was built during the 1870-80s and full of different styles of decoration, none of them restrained in the slightest, even the toilets are packed with Victorian style
In the main Ceremonial Hall is a most magnificent organ, concerts and performances are held here regularly

Completed in 1889, from local sandstone, the building has been beautifully restored to its original form.
One of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in Australia.. and a favorite for would be photographers like me.
The city's town hall is beautiful ~ it is a true Victorian design. There are a number of lions to spot in the architectural detail ~ including one that appears to be winking (according to our guidebooks, as an in-joke on the designer who would check the building's progress with one eye shut).
Once again, although we enjoyed admiring the exterior, this was another building where we took a pass on going inside. Sydney's weather, streets and squares were just too lovely to pass up.
This French Renaissance-style Town Hall was built in the late 1800s. It is a grand building, fitting its intended function. Inside is a lovely wood-lined concert hall, which is home to an 8000-pipe organ Free recitals are held here periodically and there is a tour run by the Centrepoint Touring Company (8223 3815.). Admission is free for normal entry as this as now only the old part of the Town Hall complex. On the Druitt St side is the entrance to the hall where regular fashion clothing sales are held.
If anyone were to ask a Sydneysider where the centre of Sydney was, they would say here as the steps of the Town Hall are the city's main meeting point for people meeting at all times of the day for all kinds of reasons!
This was where we all met for the Sydney VT meeting and this is where all the main marches begin - on top of that, it is about halfway down George St, which is a street that you can never escape from if you spend any time in Sydney!
The relatively small size of the Town Hall belies the massive size of the town hall complex, with the new and more security conscious building (the real town hall where decisions are made!) behind the original.
It is in the modern building that the main Sydney library is housed and it is also here in an obscure 1st floor room that a massive scale model diorama of Central Sydney is kept, complete with a chronological display of the world's tallest buildings since the 19th Century and well worth a visit!
