Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Fish are therapeutic

I was never a fan of aquariums, but I am glad I didn't let this one pass me by. It is one of the best aquariums I have seen yet. Very informative, and lots of different types of sea animals and fish. Over 11,000 animals from 650 species to be precise. I could have spent hours sitting in front of the huge glass windows, watching the fish swim by.

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Taronga Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taronga Zoo is a great zoo. It is situated at the north shore of Sydney. You have to take the ferry to get there from Circular Quay. Once on the other side of the harbour you can either decide to walk to the top, since the zoo is built on a hill, or you can take the chair lift, which is much more relaxing and exciting too.

Once at the top you can explore your way from there. A lot of the animals in the zoo are native australian animals. At the entrance you can immediately see some koalas for example. To get really close to them you can pay 3 dollars, which I thought was really worth it. On to the kangaroos, platypuses, emus etc. So much to see in this zoo, that also has a great view over Sydney's Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

A good tip is that you can buy a ticket at the Circular Quay ferry terminal which includes a return ferry trip to the zoo and entrance to the
    zoo for only 31 dollars.

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Aussie Safari...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Usually I am not a Zoo fan as I prefer to see wild animals in their natural environments.

However Taronga Zoo is a pleasant place to visit due to its exceptionnal location on the Sydney Bay. You could enjoy wonderful views on the City from there.

The trip to go there from Circular Quay is also quite original: a ferry cruise accross the Bay and then a cable car ride up the hill then stroll down enjoying the views and a large selection of Australia fauna. Do not miss the flight bird show which is quite impressive (daily, 12Pm and 3PM).

    Open daily 9AM- 5PM
Choose the combined ticket return Ferry / Sky Safari or Bus / Zoo entry for a cheaper price.

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Taronga Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Taronga Zoo is fantastic! :) I totally recommend the ferry trip across the harbour to get to the zoo...

When we visited in March 2004 there were baby tiger cubs and a lion cub...very cute!!! :)

Entry is around $25 for an adult but you can get discount cards out of most Sydney informationn brochures so check them out before you go along.

If you love animals like I do, it would be worth your time to check out the zoo. This famous harbourside zoo is home to over 2,000 animals and is just a ferry ride away out of Circular Quay.
Once you arrive, you pay a reasonable entrance fee and are whisked away by cable car to the the upper main entrance of the zoo.
The zoo is clean, well kept, and does not smell. The animals seem to be quite happy here.
Special emphasis is placed on unique Australian wildlife exhibits, and animals are contained in environments closely resembling their natural habitat.
Maps are provided, so you know where you are heading when wandering down the many walkways. There is also a refreshment stand there. If you are tired, thirsty, or hungry, you can stop here to get a bite.
If you want to take a picture with a koala, you can, for a fee.My advice to you, go to Featherdale (about 30 minutes out of Sydney by train) where you can take your picture with a koala for free. Another thing, I know they used to let you hold the koalas in the past, but because it causes stress to the animal, they now prohibit that. Sure, how would you feel if hundreds of people wanted to hold you and flash cameras in you face everyday? Not fun at all.
I especially recommend that you stop by and watch the chimpanzees. I spent most of my time there watching their comical acts. They do some really weird stuff.
When leaving the zoo, and heading out to the ferry, notice the small beach to the right. That little beach is home to a group of faery penguins ( the smallest penguins in the world!). They go out to sea during the day and return to their little burrows in the sand at night. Just some info that I thought you might like to know.
I could go on and on, but the best thing for you is to go and see for yourself!

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Visit the new WARATAH PARK
  • Tip Rating:
  • Feed and pet a kangaroo in their native environment, see a dingo, native birds and marsupials.

My visit to Waratah park was November 2002, it was since shut down due to neglect of the animals, and re-opened this year under new management. I'm not sure how much has changed, but if it's anything like the old Waratah Park, they had BBQ's available to use, a nice place to picnic, and a chance to get up close to the koalas too.

It's a scenic drive just north of Sydney and a nice day out with the family.

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Leafy Sea Dragons
  • Tip Rating:
  • I generally feel pity for trapped animals, even when they are captive in zoos, circuses and aquariums in order to give humans a chance to admire them.

But I just *had* to see a leafy sea dragon with my own two eyes. One of these days I'll put on a really warm wetsuit and take the plunge into the cold waters of southern Australia to see them in the wild, but for now, the ones on display at the Sydney Aquarium are going to have to satisfy my curiosity. (And in case *you're* curious, a leafy sea dragon isn't really a dragon, but a fish, one closely related to a seahorse, which of course is not a horse, but is also a fish.)

The aquarium, in addition to captive fish, has some crocodiles, reptiles, water birds, turtles, platypus, crustaceans, sea lions, sea stars, and octopus on display.

Zoo / Aquarium/ Animal parks: Taronga Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located across the harbor and accessed by boat, this is Australia largest and best known zoo. Here, one can see animals from all over the world. But it is the exhibits on native animals that attracts most visitors. Gray and Red Kangaroos can be seen in open enclosures. Koalas, Tasmanians Devils and a host of other aussie critters can be seen as well. If your not looking for wildlife in the wild, this is perhaps the best place to get to see the full range of Australian animals in one place. Of course, there are birds, reptiles and amphibians as well. For anyone interested in nature, the Taronga Zoo is a must.

    Pinguins in the aquarium

The Sydney Aquarium has the largest collection of sea animals in the country. There are over 11000 animals of around 650 species. The highlights of the museum are the 145m long tubes that run through the huge water tank, that includes sharks and lots of other fish. Other aquariums have pinguins, sea lions and of course lots and lots of fish in them. This is the best aquarium I have been to so far.

If you would like to see some of the animals you can find in the Aquarium take a look at my Sydney Aquarium travelogue.
