Pinguins in the aquarium by martin_nl The Sydney Aquarium has the largest collection of sea animals in the country. There are over 11000 animals of around 650 species. The highlights of the museum are the 145m long tubes that run through the huge water tank, that includes sharks and lots of other fish. Other aquariums have pinguins, sea lions and of course lots and lots of fish in them. This is the best aquarium I have been to so far. If you would like to see some of the animals you can find in the Aquarium take a look at my Sydney Aquarium travelogue. Leave a Comment

Koala@OakvaleF&F by xuessium Port Stephens is 220 kilometres from Sydney, essentially a 2.5 hours drive north from Sydney via the F3 Freeway. I came here via day tour, which is always on any day tour itinerary brochure in Sydney. It's a little pricey at almost A$150 per pax (including Hunter Valley). Oakvale Farm & Fauna World is just another one of the many wildlife parks and sanctuaries that litter throughout Australia. This is possibly my 10th visit to one of these places so do excuse me if I am a little jaded but my guess is that for first-time-folks to Oz, this park will excites with its many indigenious marsupials (eg: kangaroos, wombats, koalas etc) on display. You can roam the grounds and see the animals as well as feed the kangaroos, the ponies and the alpacas, always a thrill for kids. The koala pen has to be one of the most spacious I have seen. Not too bad a place to stop and catch up on your zoology lesson. Taronga Park Zoo is one of Australia's best Zoos. It has a large collection or native animals so if you keen to see a kangaroo or koala and haven't managed to see one in the wild, this is the place to visit. I love Mossman which is were the Zoo is located. It is located on elevated land along the water and has great views of the city. Leave a Comment Directions: It is probably best to catch the ferry from Circular Quay.

Featherdale Wildlife Park by sabrina_florida While Taronga Zoo is the most famous in Sydney, to me it's not worth visiting at all. Why? Well, what's the point in looking at elephants and giraffes when you can see them in your own city's zoo? In Feathedale, you can touch and feed the kangaroos! (In Taronga you can't) And the good thing about this place is that ALL the animals are typical from Australia: koalas, kangaroos, emus, equidnas, etc. You cannot carry the koalas here (apparently they get stressed!) but you can get to be close to them and caress them. It's open every day from 9 to 5. Leave a Comment Address: 40 minutes from Sydney by train.Directions: Take the train and get off in Blacktown station. Take a taxi there, it just takes 5 minutes to arrive. Or take bus #725 from the station.

for some of the best views of Sydney then visit the Taronga Zoo, after much deliberation we decided the giraffes have the best look out although the collection of exotic animals is very good its the native Australian collection we found the most interesting, and the koala encounter best of all the zoo was first built in 1916 and was undergoing considerable builing works when we visited, to provide more spacious accommodation for the animals. It was a little chaotic - we couldnt find the elephants, not the sort of creature you can easily overlook - but we had a great day there if you like you can do a 1 1/2 to 2 hour VIP tour which costs $55 including entry, [ booking required 02 9969 2777 ]but we just wanted to wander but do buy the Zoo Pass which includes return ferry from Circular Quay, cablecar ride up to the Zoo and Zoo entry for $28.40, alternatively you can get bus number 247 from the centre of Sydney the zoo is open daily from 0900 to 1700 Leave a Comment Address: Bradleys Head Road, Mosman BayPhone: 02 9969 2777

Opened in 1884, the Taronga Zoo is the first public zoo in New South Wales. The Taronga Zoo is located on the North side of the harbour. It's in a direct line of the center of Sydney. Just for its spectacular view on the Sydney skyline the Zoo is worth a visit. Although you can drive to Taronga Zoo we prefered (like most visitors) to go there by ferry. You can reach the Zoo by the ferry from Circular Quay, from Wharf 2, which is a 12-minute journey. Once you're on the harbour of the Zoo there are three ways to travel to the enterance. Of course you can go by foot or by the bus, but the most spectacular way to do this is by cable railway (the Sky Safari cable car) along the hill towards the enterance. This journey provides spectacular views of the harbour. The most popular travel package referred to as the Zoopass, offers a there-and-back-again ferry ride, Zoo admission, as well as Sky Safari access. koala by misakitaguchi I went to there when I was 16years old as a homestay program. Taronga means "view of beautiful water" by Aborizini word. You can see several kind of animals like koala, kangaloo, emu, dingo blackdevil and duckbill etc. Adult and Children both can enjoy at there. Adult enter fee is about $15 and Child fee is about $7.5. ( But this enter fee is by 1999) Leave a Comment Address: Brdaleys Head Rd,MosmanPhone: 02-9969-2777Directions: Ferry is available.No2 walf.

Yep, it is touristy but I really wanted to see a koala and a kangaroo. I had a blast! There were lots of Australian animals--cool. The Koalas were in shaded pens without mesh or screen or bars so you could stick your head in and take a good look and one stuck its hand up to toutch mine. There is always one on "show" that you can pet although I get the feeling is their nap time and they only tolorate us toutching them because it is just too darn hot to object. Then the kangaroos...all over the place and nothing separating us from them. Buy an ice cream cone with food to feed to them--it is fun just trying to keep the birds from steeling it. There are lots of birds but the cages are huge (a great problem for birds) and bars are close spaced so taking photos is useless until you find the cockaburro sitting right there on an outside rail. It must be a rehabilitated bird that can no longer fly--I didn't ask, just took photos and starred into its huge, gorgeous, dark eyes. With shuch a short visit to Australia, this was a way for me to see the animals I would not have time to see in the wild. You get a discount if you buy the all day transportation pass. Admissions without discount is (AUD) $20. Leave a Comment Address: Doonside--40 minutes from CBDDirections: Take the train to Blacktown then the bus (#725). I found it really is not that far of a walk and the bus can be skipped.Website: http://www.featherdale.com.au/index.htm
