Alot of zoos in Australia won't let you touch a Koala or have your photo taken with one. At the Featherdale Wildlife Park, you can do both. You can also hand feed Kangaroos, Wallabies and Emus. There are tour operators that have special tours to this park from Sydney's CBD. But you can drive there if you wanted to. The website is: www.featherdale.com.au

Madonna and child. by unravelau While I have seen plenty of koala in the wild and often with babies on their backs, this was the first time that I had ever seen a baby suckling its mother. Although this was taken at Taronga Park Zoo and far from being totally in the wild, every effort is made to keep all of the animals in as close to their proper environment as possible. by alisonr You can get a return ferry ticket from Cirqular Quay plus entry to the zoo for $31 adult, which is great value. Might I suggest catching the skybus or the bus to the top entrance of the zoo once you get off your ferry, or else you will be walking up hill for the majority of your zoo experience ( like we did). It was a very hot day when we went so it was extra hard work! Try to get to see a keeper talk or feeding session while you are there. We watched the chimpanzees getting fed and heard a 1/2 hour talk which was really informative. Also saw a bird display which was great. The koala talk was really interesting, I found out some things about these Aussie natives that even I didn't know, and I see them all the time! They are in the process of building a huge new elephant enclosure which is great news. You can have your photo taken with giraffes and koalas at certian times of the day, check your zoo guide for this. There are masses of photos of the zoo animals at soon to be made travelouge. Oh incidentally, if you have ever heard that the giraffes at the zoo have the best view in Sydney, they are sooooo right, it is unreal!!! View of harbour, bridge and Opera house by linnyloo Taronga is believed to be an Aboriginal word meaning 'water view' and Taronga Zoo definitely has one of the best water views in the World. (see my photo!) Taronga Zoo is Australias major zoo. The Zoo was officially opened in 1916 and since then millions of people have enjoyed its wonderful animals and spectacular grounds. Taronga Zoo has about 380 species and over 2200 individual animals. The zoo is open every day of the year and can also be reached by ferry from Circular Quay. Taronga offers live shows involving performing animals of all kinds. There is a Sky Safari cable car which operates between the Zoo wharf and the Top Entrance. If you arrive by ferry as we did, it is advisable to take the cable car to the top entrance to start your visit. It goes over the grounds and is a wonderful 'birds eye view' of the zoo before starting the tour - also the best part for the kids! You can use the cable car as often as you like as it is unlimited with your admission ticket. It is also easier to walk through the zoo 'downwards' towards the wharf rather than upwards as it is a little steep. There are strollers to hire, ( $12 a day.) which was a good plan as it took us the whole day to see everything and little legs get really tired. Fast food outlets offer hot and cold snacks at various places in the grounds. Koala Encounters – Have your photo taken with a Koala! We missed this as there are certain times when they do it as koalas are very sleepy. They were all sleeping when we saw them. Leave a Comment Directions: About 12 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay and the CBD. ( depart Circular Quay, every quarter past and quarter to the hour). Also accessible by bus. Buses leave from Wynyard bus station and depart from the Zoo's Main Entrance daily.

Taronga Zoo Entrance by Canadienne I have general reservations about visiting zoos ~ I find them often to be depressing places that cause me upset over the animals' living conditions (an enclosure may be big compared to other zoos, but how does it compare to the animal's natural habitat?). However, I do recognize the great work zoos can contribute in breeding and research. Taronga Zoo has an excellent reputation in this field. . and the setting of the zoo is incredible (habour background wherever you look). See my travelogue for some animal shots ~ I took quite a few. The entrance to the aquarium by kooka3 Sydney Aquarium has 5000 fish representing over 650 different species, making it one of the largest aquariums in the world. The best part of the aquarium is the 150 metres of underwater tunnels -- it's a great way to see the sharks!! There are also two oceanariums, a seal sanctuary, a penguin habitat, and other great exhibits. There are over 11,000 animals in all. The aquarium has great exhibits showing fish from all over Australia -- both the internal waterways and the oceans around the country. Make sure you catch the feedings that happen 2x a day - usually at 11 am (a couple days they are at 9am) and either 3pm or 3:15 pm. The aquarium is open 9.30am-9pm daily. Admission is AUD $24 for Adults and AUD $12 for children, but there are often coupons in newspapers and other things around town. Leave a Comment

The brand new Sydney Wildlife World has just opened in Darling Harbour. It is a very good native animal experience for tourists and locals alike. I find when you visit zoo's in big cities you see the same old animals, elephants, monkeys, giraffes etc. If you are after a 100% native experience then SWW is for you. Zoo-oligists wander around the different sections carrying snakes, possums and baby koalas. There is a really cool free service in the zoo. If you switch your bluetooth on in your mobile phone you can choose to download free animal sounds, ringtones, wallpapers and bizarre facts about these fascinating native animals of Australia. The best thing is that it is free to download. I've described Taronga Zoo in my intro to Sydney, but I must say again that it is a must see. If you aren't going to have a chance to wander up into Croc territory... you can see close up one of those huge Salties that Steve Irwin liked to play with. The birds of Australia are there to be enjoyed or giggle at. Your chance to see a Koala in the wilds is not too likely, much less an echidna, dingo or wombat... well here at the zoo you have your opportunity. I will always love seeing the big cats and apes of Africa & Asia, and Taronga offered me that chance again. The sister zoo in Dubbo, beyond the Blue Mtns wasn't as great, except for the huge tortoises. Leave a Comment Directions: Best to take the ferry directly to the zoo from Circular Quay.
