Photo from the Featherdale website by supercarys This is a wildlife park where you can get up close and personal with native australian animals. You can feed a kangaroo or an emu, you can see koalas up close, it's a nice place to see the natives if you don't have enough time to get out into the wild - you might not see koalas in the wild anyway. The prices range from $9.50 for kids to $19 for adults. Seniors and student discounts apply if you show your card. The photo is from the Featherdale Wildlife Park webpage My 8 year old neice Superjessie says "There are lots of birds there. There was every type you could think of. There were also reptiles like snakes and lizards and there were spiders and frogs and platypuses." Address: 217-229 Kildare Road, Doonside, NSWPhone: (612) 9622 1644Directions: Take the M4 from Sydney or a train from Central station, then a bus (the bus info is on the website).Website: http://www.featherdale.com.au/aboutus/

Coming to a tree near you by iandsmith What we have here is a fox. Then again, although they're called flying foxes they are rather obviously related to bats and are often called fruit bats because that's one of the things they eat. If you're thinking you might be lucky to see one, the chances are they're all around you. Even on the streets of cities like Sydney (especially Manly). If you are wandering past a tree at night and hear screeching noises and heavy fluttering, don't panic, it's most likely just a grey-headed flying fox. They mainly diet on nectar and pollen from eucalypts, banksias and melaleucas but, where their habitat has been disturbed (generally by urban development), you may find them dining on fruit from your backyard. Weighing in at up to a kilogram and with a wing span of up to a metre they have a flight speed of 25km per hour and range up to 30 kilometres from their base using their night vision and sense of smell. If you look closely at the pic (from a National Parks and Wildlife brochure), you'll note the hooks on their wings that they use to clamber around the branches. They're cut little critters and the best place I've ever come across to see them is at Wingham on the north coast of N.S.W. where a reserve has been set aside and you can see them by the thousand during the day. The only problem they have is that they carry a Lyssavirus that can be harmful to man but only if you're actually holding one (an extremely unlikely scenario) and you get bitten or scratched. They are not there to attack you so just enjoy watching them as I do. Leave a Comment

Sydney Aquarium by ValbyDK The Sydney Aquarium was opened in 1988, and is located on the eastern side of Darling Harbour. The aquarium displays more than 11500 fish and aquatic animals, including huge sharks and rays, platypus, seals, fairy penguins, crocodiles and much more. Properly the best aquarium I have ever visited. I especially like the underwater tunnels where sharks swim above you. There is also a good exhibition of the Great Barrier Reef coral environment.

A great place for tourists to visit is Waratah Park in Northern Sydney. This park has a large collection of Kangaroos, Emus and Koalas. You are allowed to go into enclosures and hand feed the emus and kangaroos. A great way to get close to the countries natural animals. This park was also used for the location of a great television show while I was growing up...Skippy the bush Kangaroo. ADDITIONAL NOTE. While in Sydney in June 2004 I read a newspaper article about the closure of the park. This is due to the owner mistreating the animals. There is a chance it has re opened under new management, but call to check before you go there. Leave a Comment Address: Namba Road. Duffy's ForestPhone: +61 2 9450 2377

a scenic from the Zoo by joandarcy I oves animals, whereever I go, Zoos are always no.1 in my lists. Here, they have the Aussie Walkabout where its a trail to see all the animals downunder! Do not miss the The Free Flight Bird Show as it is certainly a sight to see. The show has a huge variety of free flighted birds - pigeons, parrots, hawks even a Brolga! The spectacular amphitheatre is perched on the edge of a cliff top, with an amazing view of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney skyline. Whilst not the cheapest thing to do ( at around 32 $ per adult) it is the most spectacular location for a zoo and there are certainly plenty of animals to look at and you will get a lot of exercise walking around. I've been to the zoo many times but had never been to a bird show ( which is fantastic & very hands on) which I would definitely recommend. Now that the elephants are there it would be worth going as their enclosure alone was quite a sight. The new aquarium enclosure will be wonderful when finished, but if merecats, pigmy hippos, lions & leopard pups don't excite you then nothing will!! If you're a zooo lover - try a tax deductable zoo friends sponsorship which allows free entry for two people for an entire year and you actually know that you are helping to feed whichever kind of animal it is you love , i.e. spider monkey! This place is larger than it looks from the outside. Has an excellent collection of fish and other animals. Another good thing is this is one of the few attractions open in the evening. Leave a Comment
