Public Transport: Excellent all purpose website
  • Tip Rating:
  • This website is an excellent resource for the prospective traveller to Sydney. It covers all the public transportation options of bus, train & ferry with timetables, fares etc, in fact everything you could want to know Although I had to choose above that this tip is "around" Sydney you can also find out information about travel to other parts of New South Wales from Sydney. Lastly, the photo I have attached here is the ferry "Queenscliffe" which plies the Manly - Sydney route one of the nicest ferry rides you can have here in Sydney just for the scenic pleasure. I tool it when I was on a school excursion (field trip to you Americans) to Many Ocean World which is just across from where the ferry comes in from Circular Quay in the city.

Ferry / Jet Cat / River Cat: Ferry
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best ways to see (and get around) Sydney is on a Ferry. The ferries are located on "Circular Quay and can take you to more than 41 different warfs". There are all different types of ferries. We cruised on the ferries to Taronga Zoo, Manly Beach and Watson's Bay. Download their ferry schedules via their website. The prices are reasonable and you enjoy a fantastic view of Sydney as you are crusing to your location.

One of my favorite things about Sydney are the ferry boats. The fleet ranges from boat to river cats (big catamarans that prowl the waters of the Sydney embayments). The ferries run in conjuction with the buses and the trains, connecting everywhere from Parramatta to Darling Harbor and the Circular Quay (pronounced "key"). We took the Circular Quay to Cremorne Point ferry at least 2 to 3 times daily during our stay. The ferries are an affordable mode of transportation and if you purchase a "Day Tripper" pass for $15.00 AUD, then you will have access to all the ferry routes, bus routes, including the Explorer bus, and trains. I found the website for the ferries before I left for Sydney and the transportation office mailed me a transportaion packet free! It came with discount coupons and maps!

I'll always recommend walking to anyone while traveling. Sydney is no exception. Walking is the best way to find those off the beaten path places, nice little pubs or for just enjoying the great wheather. There are so many wonderful sights to see, and walking allows you to explore more. One of my most memorable walks was from Circular Quay, through McQuarie Street, along Hyde Park, to Darling Harbour and Chinatown....phew what a walk!! I love walking, and I'll always explore a city on foot.

The ferry system here is great. I think by numbers of passengers it is less than Hong Kong but i feel like it is of more use here in Sydney. Wonderful way to see the sites and get out on the water cheap. Go to Watson's Bay for the afternoon and enjoy the experience.

    Trains: Sydney's CityRail
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sydney's CityRail is an easy and convenient way of getting around the compact city. There are about 10 separate lines that help you navigate the main tourist areas and outskirts of Sydney. We used the CityRail a few times around the city and from the airport upon our arrival.

One of the nicest things to do in Sydney is to take the ferry to Manly Beach. You depart from Circular Quay, wharf 3 if I'm not mistaken, and the ferry will take you through the harbour right to Manly in about 30-40 minutes. The best time to take the ferry is on a sunny day during the weekend. There will be so many boats out there on the water, it's just great! When you arrive in Manly you can do some shopping in all the surf shops. At the end of the shopping street you will have the beach. You wil have great views of the Opera House as you depart Circular Quay and on your way back you can take magnificient pictures of the city and the Harbour Bridge. Go back around sunset, which is around 19:30 or 20:00 in summertime.

Airways / Airports: Cheap Way out of the Airport!
  • Tip Rating:
  • We found Airport Connect and thought it was a good deal. Since we weren't renting a car in Sydney, we were just looking for the least expensive way to get to our hotel and back. Just after you claim your baggage, head to the rental car area and you will find a desk advertising 'Airport Shuttles'. Here, you can get a fare to your hotel and back for $17.50 per person. They have buses that seat about 10 people, so you may have a little bit of a wait for the bus to fill up, but it shouldn't be too long. Then on your return ticket, there is an 1800 number to call the day before you leave and let them know what time you need to be picked up! It was easy, painless, and fairly inexpensive. I guess you should check out the taxi fares to where you need to go and the number of people in your party to see if this is the best option for you!

Airways / Airports: Try Tan's Tours for airport transfers

Sure, getting to Sydney is the hard part. You're going to have to fly thousands of miles from your homeland, crossing hours and days of time zones. But, getting to the Kingsford-Smith airport doesn't completely close the deal....you still have to get to your hotel or pension. Our hotel (The Victoria Court) "strongly recommended" that we either take a taxi, or that we use the Kingsford-Smith Airport shuttle. Well, we went looking for a taxi, and on the way, we met "Tan". Tan is a likeable fellow who is running his own small tour and shuttle business. He was so friendly and nice that we decided to give HIM our business. He carried all our bags with a huge smile, and then comfortably whisked us to our hotel. On our return trip, we again made booking with Tan. He showed up 10 minutes EARLY to pick us up and carried every bag we had FROM our hotel room to his tour bus. All in all, Tan was great. So, WE strongly recommend that you make booking with this dependable, friendly and hard-working fellow. He'll take very good care of you. Cost is A$9 per person, no tip expected. (I gave him one, though...those bags are heavy) If you book your return trip when you arrive, it'll just be A$14 per person roundtrip. We were idiots and failed to do this.....but Tan still gave me the discount because I kept his card and recommended him to other guests at our hotel. ; )
